The room fell silent for a few seconds.

Claire stared at the notebook without moving.

James stared at me, his lips twitching. "Emily, what are you getting at?"

"Nothing much." I opened the notebook. "Didn't you say this split arrangement was totally fair? Come on then. Let's compare the numbers."

"What's there to compare?"

"First item, the renovation." I cut him off. "You remember that, right? Total cost, 77 thousand dollars."

James stopped talking.

Claire jumped in from the side. "Didn't you two split the renovation fifty-fifty?"

"Did we?" I turned the notebook toward her. "These are the transfer records…
