Chapter 3
As soon as Jason finished, Caroline rolled her eyes at him. "Then why didn't she say anything when the security guard asked if she was the bride tomorrow? I bet she's not up to anything good."
Jason was left speechless by Caroline's comeback.
He saw me and immediately called out, sounding anxious, "Nora, explain things to your aunt."
I stood my ground and shot back, "What's there to explain? Isn't my aunt just telling the truth?"
Jason froze for a few seconds, then his face darkened. "Nora, Amber's been running around all day for you, even changed the banquet time just so you could get some rest. How could you say that? Don't you have a heart?"
I glanced at Amber, who looked all smug and satisfied with herself.
Honestly, it was just ridiculous.
She claimed she was here to help, but when I asked her to hold my ring, she managed to drop it straight into the slop bucket.
Then she tried to fix my wedding dress, but ended up stepping all over it and left a bunch of big, dirty footprints.
Even the wedding emcee noticed something was off and quietly asked me, "Does Amber have some kind of grudge against you or something?"
"Nora, apologize to Amber right now." Jason's voice was sharp.
His tone grew even colder when I stayed silent.
Amber, standing next to him, shot me a smug glance, then tugged at his sleeve with a pitiful look. "Jason, really, you don't need to make her apologize.
"I can handle it. Don't let me mess things up between you and Nora."
"Amber, you don't have to endure this. I promised Grover I'd never let you be mistreated," Jason said.
Jason stared at me, his words slow and deliberate. "Nora, if you won't apologize to Amber, then the wedding's off tomorrow."
"Fine," I shot back, not even hesitating.
Jason looked stunned. "Nora, can't you just be sensible?"
He scowled, rare anger flashing across his face. "Amber's gone through all this for your sake, and you can't even apologize?"
It was always for my sake.
I let out a bitter, self-mocking laugh, almost spilling everything I'd been holding back, but in the end, I swallowed my words.
"No. Jason, here's your choice: I'm not apologizing. If you stay, the wedding goes on as planned. But if you take her and get out right now, the wedding's canceled tomorrow," I said.
Jason's eyes flashed with panic.
He was just about to speak when Amber suddenly said, "Nora, please, don't let me and Jason get between you two.
"He loves you so much, even my mom knows it..."
As soon as Grover's name was mentioned, Jason's indecision disappeared in an instant.
He helped Amber up, his voice cold. "Nora, I've always made you my priority all these years, but not this time.
"I'm giving you tonight to think it over. If you still won't apologize to Amber by tomorrow morning, the wedding's canceled."
With that, Jason gave me a cold look and walked off with Amber.
I watched them leave, their backs getting farther and farther away.
Caroline, still held back by my mom, finally couldn't hold it in and started yelling, "Who does he think he is? Nora, you absolutely can't apologize to them. This wedding—"
"The wedding's off," I interrupted her.
I gave Caroline a comforting smile. "Aunt Caroline, you and Mom go ahead and tell everyone the wedding's canceled.
"Dad, you take care of canceling the wedding cars and the emcee. I'll call the hotel and have them take down all the decorations and cancel the banquet."
I looked down and blocked Jason everywhere.
