Chapter 4
Watching the most precious sapphire in the center break into pieces, it felt like my heart broke along with it.
That was my most cherished memory: the love and warmth my mom left behind for me. And now Matthew just stomped all over it.
My mind was ringing, my eyes stung with tears as I glared at the man I'd loved for eight years.
Finally, something inside me snapped. Like a madwoman, I snatched up a plate and flung it at him, screaming, "Matthew, you're the worst!"
The security guards rushed over and grabbed me, while Matthew was livid, thinking I'd embarrassed him in front of everyone with my crazy outburst.
He shouted, "Lillian, I'm rich and powerful now, and I'm still keeping you as my wife. Don't be so ungrateful."
I was the one who used my connections and resources to help him climb the ladder, step by step. I helped him reach success, and he stabbed me in the back and humiliated me like this.
"I don't need your pity. We're done. I want a divorce," I said coldly, staring him down.
I wanted him to know that without me, he was nothing.
Matthew froze for a moment, then gave a derisive laugh.
He sneered, "Fine. Divorce it is. But don't kid yourself. You're just a housewife. After this, don't even think you'll get a dime from me."
Hearing this, Jessica's eyes sparkled, and she shot me a triumphant smile.
Seeing the smug looks on their faces, I felt my anger and cold resolve harden even more.
I ignored the pitying and mocking stares from everyone else and walked away without looking back.
As soon as I stepped outside, I called Sam.
I said, "Sam, get the contract ready to terminate the agreement with Matthew Evans."
Matthew didn't show up at all for the next few days.
In the end, I was left with nothing but to bring the divorce papers and go find him.
Matthew was silent for a moment, then let out a cold, mocking laugh.
He barely glanced at the divorce papers before tossing them onto the table, then slowly looked up at me, his voice dripping with contempt.
He said, "Lillian, you really think you can divorce me? Trying to scare me?
"You've been living off me all these years, eating my food, spending my money. Now you're past your prime. Who else would even want you besides me?"
Suddenly, he grabbed me and yanked me down onto the couch, pinning me under him as he roughly grabbed my chin.
He growled, "Lillian, why are you doing this to me?
"How could you? How could you throw it all away? Everything you ever said means nothing now?"
Guess I'd just been putting up with too much all these years.
No wonder everyone, including myself, thought I was madly in love with Matthew.
But now that the fog had lifted, I saw it: Matthew was just a regular guy, nothing special at all.
I looked up into his face, brushing my fingers lightly over his features.
Calmly, I whispered in his ear, "Matthew, back then, you had a bit of charm.
"But after all these years, I'm already sick of you."
He suddenly let go of me, visibly shaken and caught off guard.
I wiped away every spot he'd touched with a wet wipe, disgust written all over my face. I said, "This was always just a deal between us. I'm sick of it now. It's over."
Matthew sneered, "Oh, so now you wanna say we don't owe each other anything?
"You saved my mom, so I agreed to be with you. I've put up with your crap for eight years, and now you actually dare to ask for a divorce?"
He grabbed my chin, teeth clenched. "Divorce?" he threatened, "In your dreams!"
I just laughed.
Matthew always thought the money I gave for his mom's medical bills was tainted.
I said, "Matthew, you've got such a twisted heart. Everything looks dirty to you."
I looked him straight in the eye and added, "I want a divorce. Jessica's pregnant with your kid. She's already three months along. Seriously, who are you to judge me for being 'dirty'?"
As I spoke, I slapped the pregnancy report right in his face.
Matthew's face went ghostly pale, panic flickering in his eyes.
But the very next second, he shot me a vicious glare and barked, "Lillian, I'm your husband. I can't believe how narrow-minded you are, digging into my business behind my back? Do you seriously not trust me at all?"
I snapped, "You've already got another woman pregnant, and you still have the nerve to talk that bullshit?
"I didn't even bother to dig into your business. Your side chick handed me this herself."
Just as Matthew was about to say something, Jessica came rushing in.
She cried out, "It's all my fault. This baby shouldn't even exist. I'll go to the hospital right now and have an abortion."
As she spoke, she swayed and nearly fell back, looking like she was about to faint.
Matthew quickly stepped forward and caught Jessica in his arms. He barked, "Lillian, quit the drama. Nobody's trying to steal your spot as my wife, but this is my child..."
I'd laid it all out for him, but he just kept playing dumb.
There was no point in talking to him anymore. I turned and headed straight for the door.
I said, "We're all adults here, so let's keep it classy. Just sign the divorce papers.
"You wouldn't want the whole city to find out you're cheating on your wife, would you, Mr. Celebrity?"
