Chapter 2
Lucas quickly turned around, his voice gentle as he tried to comfort the person on the other end of the line. "Chloe, you're the kindest girl in the world.
"As for Sophia, her whole appearance in my life was a setup from the very beginning. A woman like that is disgusting. She doesn't deserve to be anywhere near me. Chloe, don't worry. Even if I have to search every corner of the world, I'll hunt her down and make her pay."
They talked for a few more minutes before Lucas hung up, and he turned to look at Erin. His face was cold and ruthless.
"Ms. Roth, since you say Sophia is dead, then tell me where her grave is. I want you there to witness it—whether she's alive or not, she's signing those divorce papers for me," he said.
"You..." Erin gaped at him in shock, but before she could say a word, she suddenly collapsed.
As she fell, a thin streak of blood slid from the corner of her mouth.
Lucas let out a cold sneer and turned to leave.
Lucas thought it was his own weakness that made us so bold with our lies.
I felt completely useless. I couldn't do anything. How could he hurt the people I care about most?
I wanted to kill him.
I hurled myself at Lucas.
But some kind of shield protected Lucas, and I was thrown back, smashing right through several walls.
But out of nowhere, an invisible force yanked me right back.
Before I knew it, I was dragged back to Lucas's side.
The pain ripping through me was unbearable, like I was being torn apart from the inside. Something felt seriously wrong.
I kept feeling like I was about to vanish entirely.
All I wanted was to get to Erin, but no matter how hard I tried, the moment I got more than a meter from Lucas, that same force would drag me back without mercy.
I screamed my lungs out like a maniac, but no one could hear me at all.
And when I cried, all that came out were tears of blood.
Lucas pulled every string he could, tapped every connection, but searching for me was like chasing a ghost.
Even going to the cops didn't do a thing. It was as if I'd never existed at all.
Lucas lost his cool. For the first time ever, he felt something was spinning way out of his control.
Finally, Lucas went to see Emily. "Emily, if you don't want to lose your job and everything you have, you'd better start talking."
Emily shot Lucas a look that was full of hatred. "Lucas, if you want to know about Sophia, go check her hospital records from three years ago."
"She was hospitalized?" Lucas frowned. Three years ago, I really went missing for a few days. Back then, we hadn't fully broken off yet. He was still paying attention to my whereabouts.
Lucas narrowed his eyes. "Sophia better not be up to her old tricks again. If Chloe gets hurt because of her, I'll make you two pay."
As soon as Lucas arrived at the hospital, he spotted Chloe talking with a doctor, and he rushed over.
"Ms. White, if we can't find a suitable heart soon, you might not survive another month," the doctor warned gravely.
"What did you say?" Lucas demanded, grabbing the doctor by the collar.
He couldn't believe it. With all his power and resources, he still couldn't keep the girl he loved alive.
Chloe was such a wonderful girl; she didn't deserve this fate.
"I'll be okay, Lucas," Chloe murmured weakly, collapsing into his arms, but she was wearing a secret smile.
When she looked up, tears streamed down her face. Her shoulders were shaking. "Lucas, Sophia must know everything. She's hiding from me. I just don't know if, before my time is up, I'll really get to be yours."
Lucas couldn't bear to see Chloe suffer like this. He nodded resolutely, making up his mind.
I just couldn't make sense of it.
Three years ago, I'd already promised to donate my heart to Chloe.
"I'll get you the heart you need, no matter what," Lucas whispered, settling Chloe gently onto the hospital bed and running his fingers through her hair.
Right after, Lucas strode out to find the doctor. I had no choice. I was dragged after him.
"Doctor, I know someone whose heart will be a perfect match.
"Her name is Sophia Lane, Chloe's sister," Lucas said.
