Chapter 2
David's company was in information technology. It had started as a small studio, but over the past couple of years, it had grown and now occupied an entire floor.
I hadn't paid much attention before, but stepping inside this time, I realized that the women here were all strikingly attractive, and together, they were quite a sight.
As I was scanning the room, my eyes unexpectedly met someone's gaze—Eric, David's close friend and co-founder from the early startup days.
Eric Brooks paused, slightly surprised to see me, and walked over. "Emily, what brings you here?"
"I just came to take a look around," I replied.
Eric chuckled, "Bad timing—David went out of town to sign a contract today."
"I know. He told me yesterday. I just wanted to walk around a bit on my own. You don't have to worry about me," I said.
Eric nodded, but didn't feel right leaving me to wander alone. He stayed nearby, chatting casually with me.
Since outsiders rarely came to the office, my presence immediately drew curious glances from everyone.
I returned their looks, trying to spot the woman from yesterday's video.
Eric seemed uncertain about why I had come today and appeared slightly awkward.
"Emily, do you want some coffee? The client left it yesterday, and I thought it was pretty good. I can make you a cup," he suggested.
I waved him off, about to tell him not to bother, when a girl walked out of David's office.
She wore denim shorts and a floral blouse, her complexion fair and flawless, her figure perfect. She smelled faintly of Bvlgari perfume.
And somehow her figure looked eerily similar to the woman in the video.
The tighter my chest felt, the more I studied her. "Who is she?" I asked.
Eric explained with a smile. "She's a new intern, just graduated this year. She's twenty-three."
"Pretty young, huh?" I smiled.
Eric didn't catch the underlying tone of my comment and continued chatting casually.
"She's really sensible and meticulous. The other day, David spilled coffee on his shirt, and she immediately pulled out a cleaning spray and got it spotless," he added.
He didn't notice my tense expression and went on enthusiastically.
"After that, David made her his personal assistant. She organizes files perfectly—ever since she became his assistant, nothing has ever gotten mixed up," he added.
"Really? That's considerate of her." I nodded.
Eric finally noticed my cold expression and paused, puzzled.
"You go ahead and handle your work. I'll check on David—honestly, I haven't been to his office much either," I said.
Without waiting for him, I headed straight toward David's office.
The girl reached out to stop me. "Sorry, this is Mr. Stone's office. He's not here."
"Just because he's not here, I can't come in?" I shot back.
She looked like a hen protecting her territory.
"Mr. Stone told me before he left that there are many important documents here. No one is allowed in," she pressed.
I couldn't help but smirk, "Then why are you allowed in?"
She squared her shoulders and said firmly, "I'm his personal assistant. No one else can enter."
I glanced at her. "So you're saying even his wife can't come in?"
Her face went pale.
Someone in the office looked over, clearly surprised.
I hadn't visited David's company much since we got married, so it made sense that people didn't know me.
Besides, he clearly didn't want me here.
It seemed David was hiding more from me than just one mistress.
Eric quickly came over and scolded the girl. "This is David's wife, Emily. What are you blocking her for?"
The young girl's face turned red as she immediately apologized. "Emily, I'm sorry. I didn't know."
I gave her a half-smile.
"Why are you acting like this is some huge offense, like you've done something wrong? Relax. I'm not going to bite. David told me you're very capable. With an assistant like you, no wonder David can handle all his work smoothly—even when things get busy, you keep everything in order. Good job," I smiled.
After hearing this, her face went even paler. Muttering that she had other things to do, she scurried off.
My smile faded, and I didn't feel like sticking around for another second.
