Chapter 5
As soon as I stepped inside, Harper smashed a cup right at my feet.
With a sharp crack, shards of porcelain flew everywhere.
Harper shouted, jabbing her finger at my nose, "Isabella, so you think you're tough now? Daring to make a fuss about divorce? Who gave you the courage?
"Has the Wilson family ever treated you badly? We've given you food, clothes, and made you Mrs. Wilson, the woman everyone envies. What more do you want? Now you even dare to get a lawyer to sue Robert? Do you have any shame at all?"
I kept quiet and listened.
I'd heard these words so many times over the past three years.
Robert didn't say a single word the whole time.
He stood there like an outsider, watching the whole scene with cold indifference.
"Harper, please don't be upset," Mia's delicate voice called out from the top of the stairs.
Wearing a white dress, she slowly descended the stairs, holding onto the banister for support.
Her face was pale, and she looked so vulnerable that even I couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for her.
"This isn't Ms. Brown's fault. It's all on me," Mia said softly as she walked over to Harper, gently soothing her. "I shouldn't have come back and disrupted Robert and Ms. Brown's life."
Harper's face softened instantly as she grabbed Mia's hand, her voice full of concern. "Mia, what are you saying? The one who should be leaving is her, not you. In the Wilson family, you're the only woman we recognize."
After saying that, she shot me a fierce glare. "Isabella, let me make this clear. If you know what's good for you, drop the lawsuit and just stay out of trouble.
"Don't even think about pulling any more tricks. Otherwise, don't blame me for being ruthless."
I stood there, watching this absurd scene unfold.
The wife was getting scolded by her mother-in-law and the mistress, while her husband just stood by, doing nothing.
This was the ultimate soap opera of the year.
Suddenly, I felt exhausted and completely fed up.
I didn't want to waste any more energy on their drama.
"Harper," I said calmly. "Divorce is between Robert and me. My mind's made up, and I'm not changing it."
Harper shot up from her seat, her face flushed with anger.
"Robert," I turned to the man who'd been silent all this time. "Is that what you want too? You want me to drop the lawsuit, act like nothing ever happened, and keep pretending this joke of a marriage is real?"
Robert finally lifted his head. He looked at me, his eyes cold and unfamiliar.
"Isabella," he said, his voice hoarse. "Quit the drama and go home."
It was the same old line. To him, all my resistance and struggles were nothing but drama.
"And what if I don't?" I asked.
He frowned.
Just then, Mia coughed softly and slumped against Harper, looking frail. "Harper, I'm not feeling well."
Robert immediately stood up and walked anxiously over to Mia. "Mia, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
"It's nothing, just my usual thing," Mia said, giving him a weak smile.
Robert's face darkened as he turned to me, his eyes burning with undisguised disgust and anger. "Isabella, do you really have to push things this far?
"You know Mia's health is fragile, and she can't handle any stress, but you still insist on bringing up divorce right now. What's your angle?
"Compared to her, you're not even worthy to be her maid. Who are you to cause trouble here?"
Every word hit like a dagger laced with venom, stabbing deep into my heart.
Not worthy to be her maid? It turned out, in his eyes, I was nothing but a loser,
I looked at him and suddenly laughed. Then, my laughter turned into tears, streaming down my face.
After three years of marriage and three years of giving everything, in the end, all I got was being told I wasn't even worthy.
Really, that was enough.
"Fine." I wiped my tears, looking at him and then at everyone else in the room. "Since that's how you all see it, whoever wants to be Mrs. Wilson, be my guest."
"Robert, I'll see you in court." Throwing those words behind me, I turned and walked out.
This time, there was no hesitation, no regrets.
The Wilsons' door felt icy as ever. The air outside was biting cold.
I pulled open the car door and got in.
My hands were trembling so much that I couldn't even get the key into the ignition.
