As I still wouldn't give in, David lost his patience.

"Mom, since I brought Dad back, I'm not letting him leave again. Like it or not, you'll look after him," he said.

I shot him a cold look. "What if I say no?"

He looked surprised, seemingly not expecting me to be so firm.

"Don't forget," he said, "when you're old, you'll need Emily and me looking after you."

After a moment, Emily spoke up in a calm voice, "If you don't agree to take care of Dad, when you get old, we'll put you in a nursing home."
