Chapter 2
In the end, after Dorothy and I talked him around, Andrew finally put his signature on the agreement.
A pink diamond couldn't hold a candle to the value of the shares. When he'd finished signing, Andrew wrapped me up in his arms tightly.
Guilt was written all over his face. I saw my chance and advised, "Honey, don't beat yourself up. If you're worried, transfer the investments and properties to me. That way, you can feel relieved."
Andrew's eyes flashed with a bit of uncertainty, but I didn't give him a moment to hesitate. "My family's in real estate, too. I can totally keep an eye on your investments. Plus, I'm happy to play the perfect wife for you."
Maybe Dorothy was worried Andrew might have second thoughts about the shares if he didn't agree to my suggestion. She quickly added, "Seriously, the real estate market is in the gutter. Holding onto those investments is just asking to lose money. Just let her handle it. Come on. She's deaf. What are you so worried about?"
Andrew's company was a leading force in the tech industry. If it went public, those so-called investments would be a drop in the ocean compared to the value of the shares.
He never let me get involved in how the company was actually run, probably worried I'd try to get my hands on everything.
He sighed and finally gave in.
Dorothy ducked her head, but I caught the smugness and mock in her eyes, like she thought I was a fool.
I suppressed the anger rising in my chest. She didn't even bother hiding how she thought I was deaf and clueless right in front of me. I'd like to see who really got the last laugh.
As night fell, Andrew was getting ready to take me out for our anniversary. He turned to Dorothy and said, "It's our wedding anniversary, and I've booked a place just for Olivia and me. Head out already, Dorothy. Don't bug me with messages tonight, alright?"
But Dorothy clearly hadn't let go of me playing matchmaker for her earlier. She closed her eyes, mustered up her courage, and said, "Mr. Jennings, this villa is out in the middle of nowhere. I really don't want to take a taxi home alone. You've had so many anniversaries with Olivia. Missing this one won't kill you, right? Now that you've given her the present, why not just keep me company tonight?"
Andrew's face just started to turn sour, but before he could say a word, I smacked my forehead and said, "Oh wow, babe, I can't believe I totally forgot that I've got an appointment with my physical therapist tonight. Took ages to book, remember? Maybe we can celebrate tomorrow instead?"
Andrew was caught off guard, totally stunned, while Dorothy urged, "Last night, you loved trying out those new moves, remember? Want to give them another shot tonight? I even brought that uniform you like."
Hearing that, I practically wanted to throw up.
Andrew was always so prim and proper with me in bed. I used to think maybe he just wasn't that kind of guy, but it turned out that he was not that kind of guy with me.
Sure enough, Andrew tried to smooth things over, signing to me with an apologetic look. "Alright, honey, I'll drive you. I've still got some work to finish at the office anyway. As long as we're together, it's always a celebration."
I forced a smile, but I was just desperate to get far, far away from this dirtbag.
So I told him not to bother it and asked the driver to drop me off instead.

Half an hour later, I looked at Andrew's car logs. Sure enough, he'd headed straight for the office. Not long after, my phone buzzed with a message from him. [Honey, work's piling up today. I want to knock it all out so I can spend tomorrow with you. Might be home late. Don't stay up waiting.]
Trying to cover up his guilty conscience, he even sent over the paperwork for cash and investment transfers.
It looked like when I joked about it before, he was already halfway ready to say yes.
I forwarded the transfer documents and the recording I'd just made to my lawyer.
Once the lawyer confirmed everything was in order, he called me the second Andrew signed on the dotted line.
"Congratulations, Ms. Campion," the lawyer said. "Everything's set. Just one last piece of evidence, and you'll have everything you've been waiting for."
