After the call ended, I sat frozen in the dark. The dorm room was filled with nothing but the steady breathing of my roommates and the occasional sound of a car outside.

I opened my messages and stared at my chat with Mom. The last thing she had sent, ten minutes earlier, was: [Are you asleep? Do you have enough money?]

My fingers hovered over the screen. I wanted to ask whether she knew about the account. I wanted to ask what Dad had really been doing.

I wanted to ask why Harper had suddenly stepped in with money.
