To be there for my adopted sister's depression treatment abroad, Dad left Mom behind, even though her heart condition was getting worse. After they took off, my sister's lowlife ex showed up, harassing Mom and trying to shake her down for cash. The stress sent her into a heart attack, and she ended up in the ICU, fighting for her life. I blew up Dad's phone, begging him to come back since he was the only surgeon who could save her. After a million calls, he grudgingly flew home the next day. The surgery went okay, but then Dad got a call from overseas. My sister found out he'd left, lost it, and insisted on flying back. On her way to the airport, she got in a wreck and didn't make it. Dad, who's usually cool as a cucumber, flipped out and dumped all his anger on Mom. The shock was too much, and she slipped away the next day, heartbroken. I went to confront Dad, but he shoved me toward the roof's edge. As I fell, his words hit like a punch. "Chole, your face—it's like looking at your mom, and it makes me sick. Jane was supposed to be my kid! Your mom screwed it all up, stealing the love of my life. "If you hadn't hounded me to come back, Jane would still be here. You and your mom killed her. You both deserve this." I shut my eyes, consumed by rage. When I opened them, I was back to the day that creep showed up at Mom's door.
