Chapter 4

Richard's face darkened, and Chloe just kept stirring the pot. "Uncle Richard, look at Emily. She doesn't respect you at all. You've poured your heart and soul into this company, and now she's treating you like this."

"What do you think I mean? Take it at face value," I shot back, my voice cold. "Dad, I don't care about whatever you've got going on with her, or any of your drama outside. The fact is, you're divorcing Mom.

"But Grandpa left Summers Corp to me, and I won't let anyone mess with its future. Not now, not ever."

Richard got anxious. "Summers Corp is the result of my twenty years of hard work. I care about it even more than you do..."

"Do I need to remind you?" I cut him off. "You're divorcing Mom and walking away with nothing.

"Summers Corp has nothing to do with you anymore, and even less with this girl who isn't even family. You have zero say in who I fire, and pretty soon, you won't even be Chairman."

Richard's face went pale. "Emily, do you really have to be this heartless to your own father?"

I let out a cold laugh. "You're leaving Mom because you ran into your old flame. If you want to sugarcoat it, call it rekindled love. If you want the truth, it's cheating.

"When you betrayed Mom, you didn't think you were being heartless. So now that I'm stating the facts, how am I the cruel one?"

Chloe suddenly panicked, clutching Dad's sleeve like her life depended on it. "Uncle Richard, what is she talking about? How can the company have nothing to do with you?"

Richard sighed. "I'll explain it to you when we get home."

Then he turned to me. "Emily, Chloe's a good kid. Me leaving the company doesn't affect her at all. Hopefully you two can get along. Maybe she'll be able to help you someday."

"I don't need that. Mom only had me one, so I don't have any sisters. And," I stared him right in the eyes, "keeping someone this clueless around will only make my life harder. She's gone today, no exceptions."

Richard knew he couldn't win against me, so he turned to Chloe and said, "Chloe, go process your resignation. I will help you land another job after this."

Chloe left with Richard, but before heading out, she gave me a glare dripping with resentment and envy.

With Chloe gone, I convened the board, removed Richard as Chairman, and officially became Chairman of Summers Corporation.

Now all that was left was to wait for the divorce cooling-off period to end. Once Olivia and Richard finished the paperwork, this whole mess would finally be over.

But nothing ever goes smoothly. Richard had barely left the office when my phone buzzed. It was Olivia.

"Emily, you need to get home right now! That woman is making a scene at our house." Olivia shouted, her voice frantic.

"I'm on my way." I replied, my heart pounding.
