Chapter 1
When I arrived at the Voss estate, my husband was adjusting another woman's dress.
Snow fell beyond the black iron gates on the coldest Christmas Eve New York had seen in years. Inside, crystal chandeliers threw hard white light across the ballroom, and every important member of the Voss family stood waiting beneath a twenty-foot Christmas tree.
Roman Voss had one hand at Isabella Devereux's waist.
I knew that touch. Seven years ago, when he kissed me for the first time, he had held me in exactly the same way: gentle, certain, as if I were the only woman left in the world.
Roman was my husband and the most dangerous man in New York's criminal underworld. At thirty-six, he had a face women remembered and enemies feared. A black suit shaped his broad shoulders and lean waist, and his gray eyes could turn colder than a blade in winter.
Seven years earlier, that same man had knelt before me and taken my hand.
"Vivian, I can't promise you an ordinary life," Roman had said.
Then he had closed my fingers around his ring.
"But I promise I will choose you for the rest of mine."
I had believed him.
Until tonight.
Every Voss elder saw me enter. No one looked surprised. Their careful silence told me the truth before Roman said a word.
Everyone knew.
I was the only one who had not been told.
"Vivian."
Roman turned toward me. His voice was still deep and familiar, but for the first time in seven years, hearing my name on his lips made him sound like a stranger.
He removed his hand from Isabella's waist, only to take hers.
"You're here," Roman said. "I expected you earlier."
I slipped the white fur from my shoulders and walked into the ballroom.
"Earlier?" I asked. "What exactly did you want me to arrive in time to see?"
The room went silent.
Isabella lowered her chin with practiced grace. She was the heir to the European Devereux family, a tall blonde in red velvet with the polished smile of a woman trained to look perfect beside a throne.
"Vivian, this isn't how I wanted us to meet," Isabella said softly. "After all, we may soon be family."
My gaze dropped to her hand.
An emerald ring gleamed on her finger.
It carried the symbol of the Moretti family, a dynasty the world believed had vanished in a massacre twenty-five years ago. Everyone believed its final bloodline had died in the purge.
They were wrong.
The real ring had always been with me.
The one on Isabella's hand was a copy.
I looked at Roman.
"Explain."
Roman released Isabella and faced me fully.
"I planned to tell you later."
I laughed once.
"After she gave birth?"
Something shifted in his eyes.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
The Christmas tree lights blurred behind him. Tonight was supposed to be our seventh wedding anniversary. For seven years, I had helped Roman rise from a doubted young leader to the man who controlled half the city. I had stood beside him through threats, betrayals, and nights when no one else believed he would survive.
Now he was presenting another woman as his future.
Roman stepped closer.
"You know our world doesn't run on emotion," he said.
"So?"
He paused.
"You should understand."
Understand.
I had understood his danger, his secrets, his absences, and every birthday sacrificed to family business. Now he wanted me to understand why he had chosen another woman.
"Who is she?" I asked, though I already knew.
Roman's expression did not change.
"She's pregnant."
The whole ballroom seemed to stop breathing.
"The child will be the future Voss heir," Roman continued.
My fingers touched my wedding ring.
"And what am I?"
"You're still my wife."
The answer hurt more than an insult.
"Your wife?" I asked. "A wife who stands by while another woman inherits her future?"
Roman frowned.
"Don't make this more complicated than it is."
To him, this was an arrangement. A negotiation. A necessary result that I would eventually accept.
"What do you want me to do?" I asked.
Roman was silent before giving me the order he had clearly prepared.
"Stand beside me tonight. Show everyone we're still a family."
I studied the man I had loved for seven years.
"If I were the one standing where Isabella is now, would you accept this?"
For the first time that evening, his face changed.
He did not answer.
He did not need to.
I crossed to the long table beneath the Christmas tree and opened the Voss succession agreement. My name remained on the first page, the second, and the third.
On the final page, it had been crossed out in black ink.
Below it, one sentence remained.
REMOVE VIVIAN MORETTI FROM VOSS LEGACY.
My fingertips went cold.
Roman had made me watch my own name disappear.
"Do you know the funniest part?" I asked him.
He stared at me.
I closed the document as Christmas bells began to ring outside.
"You think you're losing a wife tonight."
My gaze moved to the false emerald on Isabella's finger.
Roman had no idea what he had provoked.
"You just erased the one person your entire family could never afford to lose."
