Chapter 1
For more than a thousand years, the Kingdom of Valdora had survived by honoring a single tradition that no king, scholar, or priest had ever dared to question.
Every year, one young woman was offered to the Elder Goddess who slumbered beneath the Sacred Hollow.
The people believed the offering kept disasters away. They believed the Elder Goddess consumed the chosen woman before returning to her endless sleep. No sacrifice had ever come back, and no one had ever discovered what truly waited beneath the temple.
This year, the temple bells rang for twenty-year-old Seraphina Ashcroft.
"I refuse!"
Her voice echoed through the marble hall as two temple guardians escorted her toward the ceremonial gate. She dug her heels against the polished stone floor, but the women holding her arms barely slowed.
"There has to be a mistake!" Seraphina cried. "I'm not a saint. I skipped temple lessons whenever I could. I cheated during the history exams, and Sister Evelyn caught me sneaking desserts from the kitchen more than once!"
Neither guardian answered immediately.
Finally, the older woman spoke without looking at her.
"The Elder Goddess has already spoken."
Seraphina blinked.
"What do you mean she spoke?"
"The High Oracle received your name during the Midnight Revelation."
The younger guardian continued calmly, "The ceremony where the citizens vote is only to preserve peace. The chosen name is decided long before anyone enters the temple."
Seraphina stared at both women in disbelief.
"...Wait."
Her face slowly twisted with horror.
"So... the entire voting ceremony is fake?"
Neither guardian denied it.
Seraphina turned toward the thousands of citizens gathered outside the temple courtyard. Nobles stood beside merchants. Children sat on their fathers' shoulders. Travelers watched from every rooftop.
"Did everyone hear that?" she shouted. "You've been participating in a fake election! Doesn't anyone care?"
Silence answered her.
Not a single person stepped forward.
Some lowered their heads.
Others smiled proudly.
Several even applauded as she passed.
Her shoulders slumped.
"So... everyone is really okay with this..."
The massive bronze gates opened, revealing the ancient sanctuary where every sacrifice ended.
At the center stood a circular platform carved with glowing silver symbols. Beyond it stretched an enormous shaft that disappeared into complete darkness.
The Hollow.
According to legend, it reached the world beneath the earth where the Elder Goddess ruled.
Seraphina swallowed hard.
"No..."
Waiting beside the platform stood her family.
For one brief moment, hope returned.
Her mother looked ready to cry. Her younger sisters covered their mouths with trembling hands. Even her grandfather leaned heavily on his cane.
"They'll stop this," Seraphina whispered to herself. "They have to."
Her mother rushed forward first and wrapped both arms around her.
"My precious daughter..."
Seraphina hugged her tightly.
"I knew you'd come."
Tears rolled down her mother's cheeks as she smiled.
"Our family has never received such an honor."
Seraphina slowly pulled away.
"...What?"
"You were chosen by the Elder Goddess herself."
Her father proudly placed both hands on Seraphina's shoulders.
"Our bloodline will be remembered forever."
"I don't want to be remembered forever!" Seraphina protested. "I want to stay alive!"
Her grandfather laughed warmly.
"You've always complained too much. Face your destiny with dignity."
Before Seraphina could protest again, her father gently turned her toward the glowing platform.
Then...
He gave her a light push.
It was enough.
"No!"
Her foot slipped over the edge.
She reached desperately toward her family.
No one moved.
The world disappeared beneath her as she fell into the endless darkness.
"Mom!"
"Dad!"
"Someone help me!"
Only her own voice answered.
The shaft seemed impossibly deep. Minutes passed, then more minutes, yet the darkness never ended. Her screams eventually became whispers, replaced by exhausted breathing and frightened silence.
She had imagined death would come quickly.
Instead, it forced her to wait.
The deeper she fell, the stranger everything became.
Tiny lights appeared inside the darkness, drifting like stars. The rough stone walls gradually transformed into smooth crystal covered with glowing blue veins that pulsed like a living heartbeat.
The air became warm.
Almost comforting.
Then the ground rushed toward her.
Seraphina shut her eyes.
The impact never came.
Instead, an invisible force slowed her descent until she landed gently upon a field of soft silver flowers growing inside an enormous underground cavern.
She opened her eyes.
Countless glowing crystals covered the ceiling like a second night sky. Rivers of pale light flowed between gardens, towering trees with sapphire-colored leaves, and elegant buildings carved directly into the crystal walls.
It looked nothing like the terrifying prison described in every sacred book.
Footsteps approached.
Seraphina quickly stood and backed away.
Several women wearing dark blue robes walked toward her.
They appeared to be around her age.
Instead of looking frightened...
They looked surprised.
One woman suddenly gasped.
"You're new!"
Another smiled brightly.
"She finally arrived!"
Before Seraphina could react, a cheerful brunette hurried over and embraced her.
"You must be terrified."
Seraphina froze.
"...Who are you?"
The woman stepped back with a friendly smile.
"My name is Elara."
Seraphina frowned.
"I've never heard of you."
"You wouldn't."
Elara laughed softly.
"I was sacrificed twenty-three years ago."
The words struck harder than any fall.
"What...?"
More women stepped forward.
"I've been here for eleven years."
"Seven."
"Thirty-eight."
"Eighteen."
Each answer made Seraphina's heart pound faster.
None of them looked like prisoners.
None looked injured.
None looked dead.
A quiet voice echoed through the crystal valley.
"So..."
"It seems our final guest has finally arrived."
Every woman immediately bowed.
Seraphina slowly turned toward the source of the voice.
A tall woman emerged from the glowing mist, dressed in flowing robes that shimmered like galaxies. Her long silver hair floated without wind, and countless golden eyes briefly appeared within the darkness surrounding her before fading away.
She radiated impossible power.
Yet her expression carried neither hatred nor hunger.
Only relief.
"I am Nythera," she said calmly.
"The Elder Goddess your people have feared for centuries."
Seraphina could barely speak.
"You... you didn't kill them?"
Nythera looked at the gathered women with unmistakable affection.
"Of course not."
"They are my chosen daughters."
Silence spread across the valley.
Then Nythera's smile slowly disappeared.
"For centuries, I have asked your people to send me one worthy woman every year."
"It was never because I desired sacrifices."
"It was because I have been building an army."
Seraphina's blood ran cold.
"An army... for what?"
Nythera lifted her eyes toward the distant ceiling far above, where faint cracks of black light had begun spreading across the crystal sky.
Her voice became quieter than before.
"Because the prison is failing..."
"And if I cannot prepare all of you in time the thing I sealed beneath your world will awaken again."
The cavern suddenly trembled. Somewhere in the darkness beyond the glowing valley, something enormous opened its eyes.
