Chapter 2
The next morning, I went straight to the Wolfe Group headquarters.
As soon as I stepped into the lobby, a security guard blocked my path. "Vera, Alpha ordered that you can't come in," he said.
I stopped and gave him a cold stare. "I'm the second-largest shareholder in the Wolfe Group. Are you sure you want to block me?"
The guard looked hesitant and pointed at the walkie-talkie clipped to his chest. "These are Alpha's strict orders."
Then I heard footsteps approaching from behind.
Anna Wiggins walked over, dressed in a high-end business suit and surrounded by several assistants. Her makeup was impeccable, and she looked completely different from the weak woman she'd been at the hospital yesterday.
"Vera, don't give them a hard time," Anna said. "Connor's doing this for your own good. You only got out of the basement yesterday. You should get some rest."
I turned to face her, meeting her challenge head-on. "Anna, don't you get tired of acting and taking someone else's place as Luna?"
Anna covered her mouth, gasping dramatically. "Vera, how could you say that? You're the one who won't let go of Connor. He never loved you. He loves me."
She stepped closer, lowering her voice. "So what if you blocked a silver bullet for him? So what if you stuck with him during his lycanthropy episodes?
"Last night, by his hospital bed, he told me himself that he feels nauseous whenever you touch him."
My chest throbbed painfully.
A year ago, someone tried to kill Connor. Without thinking, I jumped in front of him, and a silver bullet ripped through my right shoulder.
The doctors said my arm was nearly destroyed. It took six months to get it working again.
Whenever his lycanthropy kicked in, he'd lose control and sink his teeth into my arm. I spent countless nights gritting my teeth, soothing him through the pain.
When he finally snapped out of it, he'd hold me and cry, promising he'd treat me right for the rest of my life.
It turned out, it was only an act. He was stringing me along, using me to secure his spot as Alpha.
I let out a cold laugh. "Is that so? Then you'd better keep a close eye on him. Don't let him come back and beg me."
Anna's expression changed for a second, but she quickly slipped back into her helpless act. "Vera, you really are stubborn. Connor's already handed the Silvermoon Mine over to me. You're nothing now."
She snatched some papers from her assistant and shoved them at me. "Go ahead and sign. These are the Silvermoon Mine transfer papers. Connor said, as long as you sign, he'll cut you a severance check."
I didn't glance at the papers and swatted them to the ground.
The documents were scattered everywhere. "Who do you think you are? Let him come talk to me himself."
Anna screamed, and everyone in the lobby turned to look.
Right at that moment, Connor stepped out of his private elevator. He rushed over and pulled Anna into his arms.
He shouted, "Vera, what the hell is wrong with you? How dare you touch Anna?"
I gave this unfaithful couple a cold stare. "All I did was refuse to sign some illegal paperwork."
Connor pointed at the door and shouted, "Get out!" Then he turned to the guards and said, "Security, throw her out."
The security guards hesitated before stepping forward.
I straightened up, scanning the room. "Who dares lay a finger on me? I hold thirty percent of the Wolfe Group's shares."
Connor let out a mocking laugh. "Thirty percent? Did you forget you signed a holding agreement? I can reclaim those shares anytime I want."
I looked up sharply.
That agreement was something I signed to appease the High Elder Council when he was at his worst with lycanthropy. And now he was using it against me.
"Connor, you're truly shameless," I snapped.
Connor casually wrapped his arm around Anna, completely unfazed. "Business is war. You were way too naive. Get out, now. And don't stain the Wolfe Group's carpet."
Anna nestled into his arms, laughing flirtatiously. "Connor, don't let her get under your skin. We've got a meeting to attend."
Connor ran his fingers gently through her hair and said, "Alright. I'll do as you say."
He turned to the security guards and ordered coldly, "Kick her out."
Two guards came up, each taking hold of one of my arms, and hauled me out the door.
