Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Chasing Her Own Melody
Melody Dawn stood in the empty rehearsal room, a guitar in her hand, wrapped in a loss she couldn't put into words. Sunlight slipped through the curtains in broken patches, falling over her like it was only making the weight in her chest worse. In the music competition that had just ended, she hadn't done nearly as well as she'd hoped. The song she'd spent forever preparing had felt weak and lifeless in front of the judges. Disappointment crashed over her in waves, and for a second, she almost wanted to give up on this dream for good.
One more try,' Melody Dawn told herself. But the memories in her head just wouldn't go away. Her thoughts were a mess, like chords that kept slipping in and out of tune. Posters for music competitions covered the wall nearby, and Melody Dawn's name was completely hidden behind them, as if even this stage was trying to erase her.
"Melody Dawn, are you okay?" Emily Quinn asked as she pushed the door open behind her, worry all over her face. She was the only friend Melody Dawn truly trusted, and she always knew how to calm her down when things got rough.
"I... I really think maybe I just don't have talent," Melody Dawn said without looking up, her voice so soft it was almost impossible to hear.
"Don't think like that. Competitions are supposed to be tough," Emily Quinn said. She walked over, sat down on the floor beside her, and looked at her with gentle but steady eyes. "Everybody gets knocked down when they're chasing a dream. You've got to believe in yourself."
"But I don't know how much longer I can keep doing this," Melody Dawn said, her voice shaking again. The guitar in her arms suddenly felt way too heavy. "I don't know how to deal with my family's expectations. They've always wanted me to get a stable job, and... I don't want to keep getting let down either."
Emily Quinn let out a quiet sigh. She understood exactly how torn Melody Dawn was. "I know how badly you want music. It's what you love. Even if this road is rough, you can't just quit now. Think about why you chose music in the first place."
Melody Dawn bit her lip as an old memory rose in her mind. She was a little girl again, sitting in the sunlight with a guitar in her hands, bright notes spilling into the air like they could chase every worry away. Back then, the path to her dream had felt pure and simple.
"Maybe... maybe I just need a little time," Melody Dawn said at last, her voice slowly growing steadier.
"That's more like it." Emily Quinn threw a hand up like they had just scored a tiny victory. "If you really love music, then go find that version of yourself again."
A faint smile finally showed on Melody Dawn's face. Then she let out a breath and made up her mind to throw herself back into music. "I need to write a new song," she said suddenly. Her thoughts were clearing up now. Maybe a new piece was exactly what she needed to break out of this rut.
Emily Quinn's eyes lit up. "Yes. That's it. I know you can do it."
A few days later, Melody Dawn went back onstage at an open mic night in a cafe. A few dozen people sat around the small stage, their chatter mixing with the smell of coffee and creating a lazy, cozy vibe. She quietly let out a breath, thinking that no matter how it turned out, at least this place felt like somewhere without pressure.
When the music started, something in Melody Dawn stirred with it. She began to play a melody she'd just written, showing a side of herself she'd never shared before. It pulsed with feeling and energy, as if every note was reaching out and making a deeper connection with the crowd.
When the song ended, the audience broke into warm, enthusiastic applause, and the gloom inside her finally started to crack. Melody Dawn lowered her head with a smile, a quiet confidence settling over her after all that struggle.
"I've never heard anything like that. It was amazing," someone in the front row said, while another person lifted a phone to capture the moment. A long-missed feeling rose in Melody Dawn's chest. This was what she'd been craving all along.
After the set, Melody Dawn stepped off the stage and was about to head back to her friend when her eyes caught on a stranger. He was standing in a dim corner with a camera in his hand, still staring toward the stage where she'd been just moments ago. His cool, distant look clashed sharply with the focus in his eyes.
It was Ethan Cole, a freelance photographer who was already making a name for himself in the industry. Years ago, he'd gone through his own share of struggle and searching before giving up commercial photography to focus on capturing moments that felt real and alive.
Melody Dawn walked over to him, then paused for a second. "Did you like my music?"
"What I like is real emotion, and your music had that," Ethan said. His voice was low and smooth, the kind that hit people right in the chest. "Your performance really pulled people in."
A faint blush crept onto Melody Dawn's cheeks. "Thanks. I... I've actually been going through a rough patch."
"That's the magic of music," Ethan said with a small nod. "It cuts through the pain and helps people find their courage again."
Melody Dawn found herself agreeing with him. What started as small talk deepened before she even realized it, shifting from dreams to creativity to all the struggle that came with both. The more they talked, the more obvious their connection became. Just then, Emily Quinn walked over with a playful grin.
"Wow, you two are really into this," Emily Quinn said with a laugh, cutting into their conversation. "Aren't you going to introduce me?"
"Oh, right. I'm Ethan Cole." He smiled and introduced himself to Emily Quinn. She immediately shot Melody Dawn a look that clearly said nice one, like she was nudging her to use this chance to broaden her world.
"Nice to meet you, Ethan," Melody Dawn said with a polite nod. But a thought had already flashed through her mind. Maybe this mysterious guy could give her the inspiration and help she needed.
As that early-summer evening sank into night, Melody Dawn slowly found her own note again amid the mix of music and friendship. She knew the road ahead was still uncertain, but the passion and resolve stirring inside her were exactly what would keep her chasing her dream. In the cafe, every tiny moment seemed to turn into a melody deep in her heart, opening a brand-new chapter in her journey.
