Chapter 1

The Pendleton mansion was quiet—too quiet. Nathalie stood on the terrace, fingers curled around a porcelain mug, steam curling upward and vanishing into the early morning haze. She hadn’t taken a sip. She just watched Benjamin’s black BMW disappear down the winding driveway like it did every weekday at 7:03 sharp.

Five years. And not once had he looked back.

“Mrs. Pendleton,” the housekeeper’s voice drifted out from the kitchen. “Shall I prepare breakfast?”

“No, thank you, Marla.” Nathalie’s voice was soft, but firm. “I won’t be staying long.”

The door clicked shut behind her as she stepped back into the house, heels tapping against polished marble. The silence of the mansion pressed against her chest, but not from comfort—from suffocation. She paused by the mirror near the front hall and stared.

Her reflection looked polished. Too polished. Smooth bun. Pearl earrings. A pristine cream coat tailored to fit her like second skin. Benjamin's taste. His approval stamped into every stitch.

She adjusted her collar. Then reached into her handbag and pulled out a crisp manila folder—the divorce papers. Her fingers trembled, just slightly. She steadied them.

“Finally,” she whispered.

The elevator to the garage was silent except for the soft mechanical hum. As it descended, her mind began to spin back, to the beginning—before vows were broken, before love turned to ashes.

“Nathalie.”

Her thoughts snapped back to the present. Benjamin’s voice echoed in her head, low and emotionless. He had said her name that way last night when she asked if he’d be home for dinner.

“No. I have an investor dinner with Holly.”

Of course. Holly.

The elevator doors opened. Nathalie slid into her Tesla and pressed the ignition. The screen lit up, but her fingers hovered above the GPS for a long moment before she typed: Manhattan Family Courthouse.

---

Traffic was a snarl of horns and steel, but Nathalie barely noticed. Her mind was full of conversations she’d rehearsed and ones she never got to have.

She had once believed time could soften a man like Benjamin Pendleton. That if she stayed long enough, loved hard enough, he would eventually see her. Choose her.

But time hadn’t softened him—it had hardened her.

The car buzzed.

Incoming call: Benjamin

She stared at the screen. Her finger hovered… then declined.

Moments later, a text appeared.

Benjamin: “Lisa’s preschool event is next Friday. Can you pick up a dress for her on your way home?”

No “please.” No “thanks.” Not even a question—just expectation.

Another text.

Benjamin: “Also, Jim needs to be at Holly’s by 4. Don’t forget again.”

Nathalie gritted her teeth, shoved her phone into her purse, and pressed harder on the gas.

---

Inside the courthouse, the air was colder, the lighting sterile. Nathalie sat across from the clerk, hands folded neatly.

“Are you sure you want to proceed without legal representation today?” the clerk asked, eyeing the documents.

“I’ve had years to prepare,” she said.

The woman gave her a sympathetic look, stamped the first page, and slid the papers into a file.

“That’s it?”

“That’s the start.”

Nathalie exhaled. The sound felt foreign to her ears. Like something had been exorcised.

Her phone vibrated again.

Holly: “Hey, just checking—Jim’s not allergic to strawberries, right? I want to make cupcakes with Lisa.”

Nathalie stared at the message, then typed back:

Nathalie: “He’s not. But you’d know that if you asked his mother once in a while.”

She didn’t wait for a reply.

---

By noon, she found herself sitting at a café near the courthouse, sipping lukewarm coffee. This one she drank—slowly.

A shadow fell across her table.

“I thought I saw you on the courthouse steps.”

Nathalie looked up, her heart skipping.

It was him.

Benjamin stood in his charcoal suit, tie slightly loosened, like always after a pitch meeting. His hair was perfectly styled, his gaze unreadable.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, coolly.

“I had a meeting across the street.” His eyes flicked to the manila folder poking from her bag. “You filed.”

She didn’t answer. The silence was answer enough.

He slid into the seat across from her. “You could’ve told me.”

“I did. Many times,” she replied, eyes steady. “You just didn’t listen.”

Benjamin ran a hand through his hair. “Look, Nathalie. If this is about the gala—”

“It’s not about the gala,” she interrupted. “It’s not about Holly. Or the dinners. Or the award. It’s about the fact that I’m invisible to you.”

“That’s not true,” he said, but the words rang hollow.

She smiled, sad and sharp. “Name the last time you looked at me like I was your wife. Not your obligation. Not your mother’s wish.”

Benjamin’s jaw tightened. “You knew what this was from the start.”

“Did I?” she said softly. “Because I thought maybe, just maybe, love could grow in a house that big. But I was wrong. It only echoed.”

He leaned forward. “Don’t do this out of pride.”

She leaned back. “Pride is the only thing I have left.”

They sat in silence.

Then, quietly, he said, “What do you want, Nathalie?”

She picked up her coffee, took one last sip, and stood.

“Freedom.”

And with that, she walked away, not once looking back.

---

Outside, the city had shifted. Something about the air felt lighter. Nathalie slid on her sunglasses, hailed a cab, and whispered an address she hadn’t said aloud in years.

“Pendleton Orchard Estate,” she told the driver.

“You going home?” he asked casually.

She looked out the window, voice firm.

“No. I’m just saying goodbye.”
