Chapter 2
It was nighttime, and the whole family was suffering from stomach pain.
Grandma was throwing up and had diarrhea, completely wiped out on the bed, calling out Dad's name.
Mom was clutching her stomach, looking absolutely miserable.
She nudged Dad awake. "Peter, get up. Go check on Grace. Did we eat something off? My stomach hurts so badly."
Dad didn't respond to her.
Just then, Mom heard Justin calling out and rushed to his side.
The night started eerily quiet.
Gradually, the quiet was replaced by chaos.
Dad, Mom, and Grandma were moaning, and Justin was wailing.
Mom was scrambling to help everyone, while Dad was dead to the world, not even stirring.
I was just a kid, completely useless in all the chaos.
With no other options, Mom called Uncle Sam over, and together they took Grandma and Justin to the clinic.
Romina Grant's POV
The doctor at the clinic asked what they'd had for dinner.
Romina Grant told the truth. "We just ate our regular food. Maybe that meat we bought wasn't fresh, and that's why Justin got a bad stomach?"
"But Grace didn't have any meat at all, so how come she is sick too?"
The doctor asked her to really think if there was anything weird or out of the ordinary.
It wasn't until Justin complained, "I don't want to take the medicine, it's way too bitter," that Romina suddenly remembered he had dumped rat poison into the pot.
"Could it be rat poison? But Grace had scrapped it out, hadn't she? Isn't that supposed to make it safe?" Her eyes widened, totally stunned.
The doctor made his diagnosis right away. "It's definitely poisoning. You need to get them to the hospital for their stomachs to be pumped, or things could get really bad."
Romina's heart was pounding, and she was frantic.
She quickly borrowed a three-wheeler and rushed them to the hospital.
After Justin and Grace finally got their stomachs pumped, they could finally catch a break.
Sam, who'd been busy all night, wiped the sweat off his forehead and complained, "How could Peter do that? His own mom and son are in such a mess, and he can still sleep like nothing's happened."
That's when Romina finally remembered Peter Grant.
She was just about to stick up for her husband in front of Sam.
Suddenly, she jolted. Something had just clicked in her mind.
Without another word, she shoved Grace and Justin into Sam's care and bolted for home.
Sure enough, Peter was already dead.
Rat poison poisoning had claimed his life.
Way before Grace and Justin started feeling sick, Peter had already told Romina he was feeling off and asked her to take him to the clinic.
But Romina was just too beat from working all day to care, so she told him to just hang in there for a bit.
She had never thought that would end up killing him.
Romina had actually felt sorry for Peter, knowing he was exhausted and not feeling well after a long day, so she chose not to ask him to help take Grace and Justin to the hospital.
Thinking back on it now, Romina couldn't help but reflect that maybe she made the wrong call. It was her decision that ended up costing Peter his chance to be saved.
Alexis Grant's POV
Mom was hurting so badly inside, completely falling apart.
She was sobbing and wailing, and in the middle of her breakdown, she caught sight of me.
She'd finally found someone to vent all her pain on, and she started yelling at me, her whole body shaking, "It was you.
"You piled your dad's plate so high tonight, and even gave him the chili sauce to go with his meal. It's your fault he died."
I was shoved down to my knees in front of Dad's corpse.
Even so, Mom still didn't feel better. "I'm gonna beat you to death, you damn brat. I should've strangled you the moment you were born.
"I should never have kept a jinx like you around. Look, even your own father ended up dead because of you."
Mom kept slapping my face, her hands raining down again and again.
Her hands hurt from all the slapping, so she started kicking me instead.
She kicked my back and my thighs, knocking me down to the floor.
Then she stomped on me, not holding back.
Even Justin joined in, stomping on me. "It's all you. You're the one who killed my dad. I'm gonna beat you to death, you damn brat. You damn wretch. You're the reason I lost my dad."
Seriously, these two were jokes.
I wasn't the one who poisoned the food, and I didn't decide to keep it just to not waste food, but somehow, they just decided I was the culprit, the one who killed my dad.
Grandma, who'd just lost her son, just sat there in the chair, totally out of it, staring at me with lifeless eyes. I couldn't even tell what she was thinking.
I wondered if she ever regretted ignoring me, stubbornly eating those poisoned mashed potatoes even after I warned her, and ending up getting her own son killed.
