Chapter 3
Chapter 3: The Switched Daughter
“You still think about it?” Elaine asked, sipping from a chipped coffee mug.
Diana glanced up from her case files. “Think about what?”
“The switch. The… fourteen-year detour.”
Diana gave a dry smile. “You mean the part where I lived someone else’s life while mine was gift-wrapped for a stranger?”
Elaine winced. “Sorry. That was blunt.”
“No. It’s accurate.” Diana leaned back in her chair. “They used to say it like it was an accident they all had to forgive. As if I owed them apologies for ruining the fantasy.”
Elaine hesitated. “You never talk about your birth mom. Sophia, right?”
“She’s dead.”
“Oh.”
Diana tapped her pen against the table. “Hospital mix-up. One mother leaves with the wrong baby. One doesn’t notice for fourteen years. One dies before she can fix it.”
Elaine frowned. “And when they found out—”
“They didn’t ‘find out.’ Fiona got sick. Blood tests didn’t match. Then the truth unraveled.”
“Jesus.”
“And when I came back, they didn’t call it a return. They called it an adoption.”
Elaine sat silently.
“‘To ease Fiona’s transition,’” Diana quoted, voice razor-sharp. “As if the girl raised in my place was the one who needed comfort.”
“Did you ever ask why?”
Diana scoffed. “Why would I? The answer was always the same—Fiona’s fragile. We must be delicate. Meanwhile, I was supposed to smile through being a second-hand daughter in my own damn bloodline.”
Elaine leaned forward. “But you stayed. For how long?”
“Three years. Long enough to learn every exit. Every silence. Every way they favored familiarity over fact.”
“You ever confront them about it?”
“Zach once said I should be grateful they ‘let me in.’” Her voice dripped venom. “As if I broke in. As if I wasn’t stolen first.”
Elaine’s face twisted. “God.”
Diana’s phone buzzed. A name flashed: Unknown.
She silenced it without blinking.
“They told the school I was adopted. Said I was adjusting poorly. That I had ‘behavioral issues.’ Teachers believed them. One even told me I should be more like Fiona.”
Elaine blinked. “Wait. She knew?”
“She smirked when she said it.”
---
At sixteen, the Thomases took family portraits.
Fiona wore soft pastels.
Zach stood behind her, straight and polished.
Their parents smiled like suburban royalty.
Diana? Off-center. In navy.
She hadn’t been told there’d be a photographer.
The frame still hung in their hallway when she left.
---
Back in the present, Diana stared out her office window, arms crossed.
“You know what the worst part was?” she asked.
Elaine shook her head.
“They made me thank them. For everything.”
---
Sixteen-year-old Diana sat at the dining table, palms sweating as her father slid a gift across to her.
A book. How to Win Friends and Influence People.
“Thought it might help,” he said casually.
She forced a smile. “Thanks.”
Fiona leaned in. “Dad picked it himself.”
Diana nodded. “Very thoughtful.”
Zach sipped his water without speaking.
Later that night, she tore the pages out one by one and flushed them down the toilet.
---
“Why didn’t you leave sooner?” Elaine asked quietly.
“I had nowhere to go.”
“What about Mathew?”
Diana hesitated. Her eyes softened. “Mathew would’ve taken me back in a second. He even promised. But he had rules in his foster placement. Couldn’t legally take in someone else without causing waves.”
Elaine nodded. “He still tried though.”
“He was the only one who called me Diana without flinching.”
A silence settled between them.
Elaine finally said, “I can’t believe they still call Fiona the ‘real’ daughter.”
“Of course they do,” Diana muttered. “They raised her. She has the old photos, the family dog, the birthday tapes. I have a medical file and a few regrets.”
“They didn’t even try to treat you equally?”
Diana’s laugh was short and bitter. “They rehearsed fairness. Zach would ‘invite’ me to join him and Fiona for things, but only if she approved. If I said no, I was antisocial. If I said yes, I was intruding.”
Elaine blinked. “That’s psychological warfare.”
“They called it family adjustment.”
---
On a chilly October evening, the Thomases had guests over—family friends from college days.
Diana stood in the kitchen helping with trays.
Mrs. Thomas murmured, “Don’t speak unless someone speaks to you first, okay? They don’t know the situation.”
Diana blinked. “What situation?”
“You’re still new. Just… keep things light.”
Fiona giggled nearby.
Zach avoided eye contact.
Diana nodded, swallowed the anger like dry glass, and served pie with a smile.
---
In her office, Diana’s fingers clenched around her pen.
“I kept a journal,” she said. “Recorded every time someone made me feel like furniture.”
Elaine raised an eyebrow. “That must’ve been… a lot of pages.”
“Five notebooks. Color-coded.”
“And you never showed them to anyone?”
“Not until court.”
Elaine’s eyes widened. “Wait—that court?”
Diana nodded slowly. “Justice requires receipts.”
---
The conversation paused as a knock came at the office door.
Daniel stepped in, holding two paper cups.
“Thought you’d need backup caffeine.”
Diana’s lips twitched. “Perfect timing.”
He handed Elaine her cup, then turned to Diana. “Everything okay?”
“We’re dissecting inherited hypocrisy.”
“Ah.” He sank into the chair beside her. “The fun stuff.”
Elaine smiled. “I’ll let you two commiserate in peace.”
She left, closing the door behind her.
Daniel sipped his coffee. “Rough morning?”
“Just revisiting the past.”
He nodded. “Zach again?”
“No. Just the house. The names. The years I spent proving I existed.”
Daniel leaned forward. “You don’t have to prove anything anymore.”
“I do,” she said softly. “Just not to them.”
He reached out, gently covering her hand. “Then prove it to yourself.”
Her fingers curled around his.
“I am,” she whispered. “One chapter at a time.”
