His voice stirred the tangled memories in my mind, and I instinctively recoiled.

Who else could it be?

He was grinning at me, as if I were some amusing, harmless little pet.

I rushed forward and clamped my hand over his mouth. "Are you insane?" I hissed, my voice urgent and shaky. "What are you doing? This is Dreadstone Castle. You can't just come and go as you please. If they catch you, you're dead."

He didn't resist. Instead, his gaze softened as it met mine. "Then what are you doing here?" he countered. "Trying to get yourself killed?"
