Chapter 4

Back in the penthouse, Connor’s voice greets me the moment I step through the door. “Darling! How was therapy today?”

I freeze, my fingers tightening around the handle of my cane. I deliberately misplace it, leaning it against the wrong wall. “Fine,” I say, forcing a yawn. “I’m just exhausted.”

Connor’s footsteps approach, his cologne filling the air. “You sound it. Maybe you should rest before dinner tomorrow night.”

I nod, feigning nonchalance. “That’s a good idea.”

But as I turn away, I catch the faintest hesitation in his voice. “Sophia?”

“Yes?”

“Your cane... it’s on the wrong side of…
