Daniel Hartley, captain of the Toronto Express, has been secretly in love with Nikolai Volkov, captain of the Chicago Bandits, for years. Their clandestine rivalry-turned-romance deepened at the Star Showcase in Miami, though neither has fully named what they mean to each other. When Daniel's linemate Lucas Vane is injured by a San Diego Sharks rookie, the Express call up Dmitri Kozlov, a young Russian forward from the BHL Toronto Minors, to finish the season. Dmitri is eager, talented, and easy to like. As captain, Daniel helps him settle in—coffee, meals, Russian lessons, even a nickname. But every friendly gesture fans the flames of Nikolai's jealousy. Watching Daniel laugh with Dmitri, learn Russian from him, and allow Dmitri to call him "Danya" leaves Nikolai furious and terrified that he is being replaced by someone who can give Daniel everything Nikolai believes he cannot. When the Bandits travel to Toronto for their final regular-season game, Nikolai's emotions boil over onto the ice: he checks Dmitri hard enough to loosen a tooth and mutters a threat in Russian. After the game, Nikolai shows up at Daniel's house, and the two finally confront the tension between them. Daniel confesses that he has been learning Russian not for Dmitri, but to surprise Nikolai with an invitation to his summer cottage—the one place that feels like home. In halting Russian, Daniel asks Nikolai to come with him. Nikolai, undone by the gesture, says yes. Months later, the jealousy has cooled into something warmer: Dmitri has been traded to the Chicago Bandits, and Nikolai greets him with an apology, a welcome, and the revelation that Daniel—his "Daisy"—is still in his life. The story ends with three men learning how to share a language, a team, and a love that no longer has to hide.
