Chapter 2
For several days, Xavier hadn't reached out to me, while his romantic life dominated entertainment headlines. As a singer, he had never garnered this level of media frenzy on his own. His extravagant display of affection had sculpted the ideal devoted husband persona. Every social media platform was awash with "accidental" sightings of them, with more and more pictures emerging.
"Selena is so gentle. They truly are the perfect couple!"
"I've been following Xavier for ages. I remember him mentioning in an interview that he had someone special and would introduce her when the time was right. Now that they're finally together, it's heartening."
"Whenever I listen to Xavier's songs, I feel the emotions he holds for another girl. Now that we know his muse, I hope she continues to inspire him to create wonderful music!"
Scrolling through more of these posts, all depicting a world of happiness, I set my phone down as harsh truth settled in. Xavier had always held Selena close to his heart. His songs were never penned for me. From start to finish, I was just there to piece together his shattered heart and maybe inadvertently boost his career—a clever maneuver, indeed.
My heart felt as if it were in a vice, each breath more labored than the last. Xavier didn't need me anymore. With his newfound fame, any agent could step in, which perhaps bolstered his confidence to make his relationship public. Given the circumstances, it was the time for me to step away completely.
Sabotaging him wasn't an option for me, but finding a replacement for him was certainly within my reach. I rubbed at the ache in my chest before using my crutches to stand. Walking was still a challenge with my leg encased in a cast, but I had to return to the office.
On my way, my phone rang. It was Xavier. After a brief hesitation, I answered.
"The hospital called to say you were discharged. Why don’t you stop by home? I have something to discuss with you."
The hospital informed him? He must have listed himself as the emergency contact on my medical records. Just as I felt a flicker of warmth, a gentle female voice cut through the line.
"Sweetheart, did your agent agree? Would someone as impressive as her even consider me?"
"Does she dare look down on you? Who does she think she is? Don’t worry, she listens to me. Not just one, she wouldn't dare refuse even if I asked her to manage ten."
I understood precisely what Xavier intended. Yet, I chose not to directly voice my refusal. "I've got other things today, so I can't make it. We'll talk another time."
I hung up, a cold laugh escaping my lips. The network and expertise I had fought fiercely to build in this cutthroat industry weren't going to be given away to someone who meant nothing to me. Not only would I not squander them on her, but Xavier wouldn't reap any benefits from them anymore either.
I had already informed Ryatt before heading to the office. As I stepped in, I saw the young man standing by my desk.
"Phoenix?"
Hearing him call my name brought me back to reality, and my crutch snagged on the doorframe, nearly sending me sprawling.
I shut my eyes in anticipation, but the tumble never happened.
"Are you alright?"
Ryatt had caught me securely. I opened my eyes, meeting his deep, steady gaze, momentarily at a loss for words.
"Phoenix, you’re blushing."
"Sorry." I regained my composure, quickly standing on my own. I sat back in my familiar chair, feigning calm. "Have a seat. Let’s discuss your future direction."
"I’ll follow your lead."
"Excellent."
I needed an artist who would listen, and I was prepared to devote all my energy to promoting him. Ryatt seemed eager to embrace my plans wholeheartedly.
