Chapter 2

The pack gathering buzzed with its usual energy—wolves mingling in their human forms, children chasing each other between the adults, the scent of grilled meat wafting from the outdoor kitchens. I stood near the edge of the crowd, a glass of wine untouched in my hand, watching the familiar rhythms of pack life unfold before me.

Three days had passed since my discovery at the hospital. Three days of maintaining the perfect Luna facade while my world crumbled beneath the surface. Lucian had been attentive as always, bringing me breakfast in bed, asking about my day, touching my shoulder with that same gentle affection that now felt like poison against my skin.

A sharp voice cut through the evening air, drawing my attention to a heated exchange near the fire pit. Rebecca Martinez, the pack's head accountant, stood facing her mate with her hands clenched into fists, her face flushed with rage.

"Don't you dare try to justify this to me, David!" Her voice carried across the gathering, causing conversations to pause and heads to turn. "I trusted you completely, and you threw it away for what? A few moments of pleasure with that she-wolf from the neighboring pack?"

David Martinez shifted uncomfortably, his eyes darting around at the growing audience. "Rebecca, please, not here. We can discuss this at home—"

"No!" She stepped back from him, her wolf's amber eyes flashing in her human face. "I'm done with your excuses, done with your lies. You want to know what I learned today? Once a bond is broken through betrayal, it can never be trusted again. Never."

The words hit me like a physical blow, resonating through my chest with painful clarity. I felt my brother Marcus approach before I saw him, his familiar presence a comfort in the chaos of my emotions.

*Sister,* his voice whispered through our sibling mind-link, warm and concerned. *You look like you've seen a ghost.*

I turned slightly toward him, keeping my expression neutral for the benefit of any watching pack members. Marcus had always been able to read me better than anyone, his Beta instincts finely tuned to the emotional undercurrents around him.

*Once a bond is broken through betrayal,* I replied through our link, my mental voice eerily calm, *it can never be trusted again.*

Marcus's sharp intake of breath told me he understood the deeper meaning behind my words. His dark eyes searched my face, and I saw the moment recognition dawned—the careful composure I'd been maintaining, the way I'd been avoiding certain topics during our recent conversations.

*Penelope, what's happened?* The urgency in his mental voice made my chest tighten.

But before I could respond, Lucian's warm hand settled on the small of my back, his Alpha presence wrapping around me like a familiar blanket. "There you are, love. I was looking for you."

I forced a smile, the expression feeling foreign on my lips. "Just watching the drama unfold. Poor Rebecca."

Lucian followed my gaze to where Rebecca was now walking away from her mate, her shoulders rigid with wounded pride. "Infidelity is a serious matter," he said, his voice carrying that authoritative tone that once made me feel protected. "It destroys the very foundation of what makes us werewolves—the sacred nature of the mate bond."

The hypocrisy of his words made bile rise in my throat. I took a small sip of wine to cover my reaction, the liquid tasting like ash on my tongue.

"Indeed," I replied, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me. "Trust, once broken, is nearly impossible to repair."

"Exactly." His fingers traced gentle circles on my back, the touch that used to comfort me now feeling like a brand. "That's why I'm so grateful for what we have, Penelope. Our bond, our trust—it's unshakeable."

Marcus made a small sound that could have been a cough, but I caught the sharp look he sent Lucian's way. My brother's protective instincts were clearly on high alert, though he couldn't yet understand the full scope of what was unfolding.

"Yes," I said softly, meeting Lucian's eyes with what I hoped looked like loving devotion. "Unshakeable."

As the evening wound down and we made our way home, I felt the weight of my decision settling over me like a shroud. Tomorrow night, I would create the perfect opportunity to test the depths of my mate's deception. Tomorrow night, I would give him one final chance to choose honesty over betrayal.

But deep in my heart, watching the way he smiled at me with such practiced sincerity, I already knew what his choice would be.
