Chapter 1
The pre-dawn air bit at my skin as I gathered my squad at the eastern border of Silvercrest territory. Five pairs of eyes watched me intently, waiting for instructions. I'd hand-selected each warrior for this mission—the most dangerous we'd faced in months.
"The rogue faction has been growing bolder," I said, my voice low but carrying clearly in the stillness. "They've attacked three families on our borders this week alone. Intelligence suggests they're camped two miles east, in the ravine."
I unfolded a rough map on the forest floor, the paper crinkling under my fingers. My second-in-command, Elias, crouched beside me, his usually relaxed face now tense with concentration.
"Victoria, these aren't ordinary rogues," he murmured. "The tracks we found yesterday... they're organized. Military precision."
"Which is why we're hitting them before they hit us," I replied, tracing the ravine's outline. "We'll split into two teams. Elias, you'll take Kira and Marcus along the ridge. My team will approach from the south. Pincer movement."
I looked up at my warriors, people who trusted me with their lives. "Remember, these rogues have nothing to lose. They won't hesitate to kill. Neither can we."
As we moved silently through the forest, I felt my wolf stirring beneath my skin, eager for battle. Five years I'd served this pack, rising to head warrior through blood and determination. Five years of proving myself worthy of standing beside Ryan as his mate and Luna.
The thought of Ryan sent a familiar ache through my chest. He'd been distant lately, buried in territory negotiations and pack politics. I pushed the feeling aside. Focus on the mission. Protect the pack.

The crescent moon cast just enough light to see by as we surrounded the rogue encampment. I counted twelve of them—more than expected. I signaled to Elias across the ravine, watching his nod of acknowledgment.
Three.
Two.
One.
We burst from the trees simultaneously, shifting mid-leap. My bones cracked and reformed in seconds, fur erupting across my skin as my wolf took over. She was large for a female, silver-gray with unusual markings—another secret I kept carefully hidden.
The rogues recovered from their surprise quickly. Too quickly. This was no ordinary band of outcasts.
A massive black wolf lunged for my throat. I twisted, catching his shoulder instead of his intended target. His teeth sank deep into my flesh. Pain blazed through me, but I used his momentum to flip him, my jaws finding his exposed neck.
Around me, chaos erupted. My warriors fought valiantly, but we were outnumbered. A female rogue with matted brown fur cornered Elias, while two others circled Kira.
Something inside me snapped. These were *my* people. *My* responsibility.
I let my wolf surge forward, taking more control than I usually allowed. With a roar that echoed through the ravine, I launched myself at the rogues threatening my squad. My claws tore through flesh, my teeth found throats and limbs. I became a silver blur of fury and protective rage.
One by one, the rogues fell back or fell permanently. But their leader—a scarred gray beast nearly twice my size—caught me off-guard. His claws raked down my side, opening deep gashes from shoulder to hip. The pain was blinding, stealing my breath.
I staggered, blood soaking my fur. My vision blurred. Through the haze of agony, I saw the rogue leader preparing for a killing blow.
Not today.
With the last of my strength, I lunged upward, my teeth finding his throat. We crashed to the ground together, his massive weight crushing me as his life drained away.
The remaining rogues scattered into the night. Victory was ours, but as I tried to stand, my legs gave way. My wolf form trembled, struggling to maintain cohesion as blood pooled beneath me.
"Victoria!" Elias's voice seemed to come from far away. "Hold on!"
Strong arms lifted me. The world spun, darkness creeping at the edges of my vision. My last thought before consciousness slipped away was of Ryan. Would he be proud? Would this finally be enough?

I awoke to the gentle touch of our pack Healer, her hands glowing with soft blue light as she worked on the worst of my wounds.
"You're lucky to be alive," she murmured, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Another inch deeper and not even I could have saved you."
Over the next few days, warriors from across the pack came to visit, bringing small gifts and tales of how the rogue threat had been neutralized thanks to our mission. Their respect warmed me, but I couldn't help noticing Ryan's absence.
"He's been in meetings," Elias explained awkwardly when he caught me staring at the door for the third time. "Territory negotiations with the Parker Pack. Very urgent, apparently."
I nodded, swallowing my disappointment. The pack came first. I understood that better than anyone.
By the time the full moon ceremony arrived, my wounds had healed enough for me to attend. I stood proudly among my fellow warriors, my silver ceremonial jacket hiding the bandages still wrapped around my torso.
Ryan looked magnificent on the ceremonial platform, his Alpha aura radiating power and authority. Beside him stood a she-wolf I didn't recognize—tall, with flowing blonde hair and a practiced smile.
"Tonight, we celebrate our victory over the rogue threat that has plagued our borders," Ryan announced, his voice carrying across the gathering. "Our warriors fought bravely."
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd. I felt a small swell of pride.
"And it is with great pleasure that I announce a change in our pack leadership," Ryan continued. "To strengthen our alliances and bring fresh perspective to our ranks, I am appointing Ashley Parker as our new head warrior."
The world seemed to stop. Ashley Parker—the blonde stranger—stepped forward, beaming with triumph.
"Victoria Sterling has served us well," Ryan added, almost as an afterthought, "but it's time for new blood."
The pack's shocked silence was deafening. Five years of loyalty. Five years of blood spilled for this pack. And just days after nearly dying to protect our borders, I was being replaced by a newcomer I'd never even met.
I stood frozen, feeling hundreds of eyes on me as the betrayal sank in, burning worse than any wound I'd ever received.
