The next day at the hospital, Karson pointed at my test results. "We've got your tetanus under control, but your immune system is pretty weak. You need to eat well and get plenty of rest."

"I'll make sure to," I said, nodding.

He hesitated for a moment. "Miss Goodwin, if you ever need help, I mean, with anything at all, you can come to me."

His eyes were sincere and full of concern. "Just so you know, the hospital has a counseling and social services department, too."
