Chapter 1
The morning sun had barely crested the horizon when the frantic howls echoed through our territory. I jolted awake, my heart racing as Lyra, my wolf, stirred anxiously within me. Something was terribly wrong.
I threw on a light dress and rushed outside, joining the growing crowd near the creek boundary. Whispers rippled through the pack members, their faces etched with horror and concern.
"Make way!" A deep voice commanded, and the sea of wolves parted as Marcus, our head scout, emerged from the tree line. The scent of blood hit me before I saw her—Emma, Ethan's beloved sister, limp in Marcus's arms, her body broken and bloodied.
"Moon Goddess," I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth. "Emma!"
I rushed forward, but hands pulled me back as Elara, our head healer, took charge. "Get her to the infirmary now!" she ordered, her usually calm voice sharp with urgency.
As they carried Emma away, I caught a glimpse of her face—pale as moonlight, eyes closed, blood matting her golden hair. My stomach twisted with dread. She was like a sister to me, the sweet girl who had watched me dance with such admiration in her eyes.
"Ethan," I whispered, scanning the crowd for my mate. I needed to be with him, to comfort him through this nightmare.
I found him at the infirmary, his powerful frame rigid with tension as he paced outside the treatment room. When he turned, the raw anguish in his eyes shattered my heart.
"Ethan," I rushed to him, reaching out. "I'm so sorry—"
He recoiled from my touch, something dark and unfamiliar flashing across his face before he masked it. "Not now, Olivia."
His rejection stung, but I understood. His sister was fighting for her life. "Of course. I'll wait with you."
Hours passed in agonizing silence. When Elara finally emerged, her expression grave, Ethan surged forward.
"She's stable," Elara said softly, "but she's in a coma. The next twenty-four hours will be critical."
Ethan's shoulders sagged, his voice hollow. "Who did this?"
"We don't know yet," Elara replied. "There were multiple attackers, based on the wounds."
I placed my hand on his arm, desperate to offer comfort, but again he pulled away. This time, the look he gave me sent ice through my veins—it was cold, assessing, almost... suspicious.
"The council will meet at midday," he announced flatly. "Everyone is required to attend."
As he walked away without another word, Lyra whimpered inside me. Something was very wrong.

The council chamber hummed with tension when I arrived. Every member of the pack had gathered, faces grim and watchful. I took my place near the front, as was customary for the Alpha's mate, but the empty space beside me felt like a chasm.
Ethan entered last, his face carved from stone. Behind him glided Victoria Pierce, her perfect features arranged in an expression of solemn concern. Something about her proximity to Ethan made my skin crawl.
"The attack on my sister was not random," Ethan began, his voice carrying to every corner of the room. "It was calculated, brutal, and perpetrated by someone within our pack."
Gasps and murmurs rippled through the crowd. My heart pounded against my ribs. Who would want to hurt sweet Emma?
"Victoria has brought evidence to my attention," Ethan continued, nodding to the woman beside him.
Victoria stepped forward, her movements graceful and precise. "With a heavy heart, I present what I've discovered." She gestured to a table I hadn't noticed before, covered with items.
My breath caught as she lifted a familiar silk scarf—my favorite, the one I often wore when dancing. But now it was stained dark with blood.
"This was found near Emma," Victoria announced, her voice carrying a tremor that seemed rehearsed. "Along with these."
She revealed photographs—grainy but clear enough to show a female figure near the creek. The build, the hair... it could have been me.
"No," I whispered, rising to my feet. "That's impossible."
"We also have witnesses," Victoria continued, as if I hadn't spoken. "Pack members who saw Olivia arguing with Emma yesterday, who heard threats exchanged."
Two wolves I barely knew stepped forward, recounting a heated exchange I'd supposedly had with Emma—an exchange that had never happened.
"Ethan," I pleaded, turning to him. "You know me. You know I would never hurt Emma. I love her like my own sister."
But the eyes that met mine belonged to a stranger—cold, hard, filled with disgust. "The evidence is clear, Olivia."
"It's fabricated!" I cried, desperation clawing at my throat. "I was home all night. I never—"
"Silence!" Ethan's Alpha command slammed into me, forcing the words back down my throat. "The council has seen enough. Olivia Reed, you will pay for your betrayal."
As the pack's shocked faces blurred around me, one thought crystallized with terrifying clarity: Victoria was smiling.

Night had fallen by the time they brought me to the pack grounds. The moon hung full and accusing in the sky, witness to my humiliation. The entire pack formed a circle around the ceremonial stone, where Ethan waited, a scroll in his hands.
"Kneel," he commanded, his Alpha tone leaving no room for refusal.
My knees hit the dirt as tears burned behind my eyes. This couldn't be happening. Not with Ethan, my mate, the man who had held me so tenderly just days ago.
"Olivia Reed," his voice rang out, "for the crime of attacking a pack member, you are sentenced to five years of servitude to the Moonlight Pack."
He unrolled the scroll—a blood oath contract. "You will sign this, binding yourself to complete atonement for your actions."
"I didn't do it," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Ethan, please. Look at me. Feel our bond. You know I'm telling the truth."
For a moment, something flickered in his eyes—doubt, pain, the ghost of what we once shared. But then Victoria stepped forward, placing a hand on his shoulder, and his expression hardened once more.
"Sign," he growled, "or be cast out as a rogue, hunted by every pack in the territory."
With trembling fingers, I took the ceremonial knife he offered. As I sliced my palm and pressed it to the parchment, I felt something inside me shatter.
Two pack enforcers stepped forward, ripping my dancer's robes from my body. The fine fabric tore like paper, leaving me exposed before the entire pack. Victoria approached with a bundle of rough cloth—servant's rags—tossing them at my feet with undisguised triumph.
As I pulled the coarse material over my shivering body, Ethan leaned close, his breath hot against my ear.
"This is just the beginning of your punishment," he whispered, voice thick with hatred. "I will make you suffer as my sister suffers. I will break you, piece by piece, until there's nothing left."
The pack watched in stunned silence as their Alpha turned his back on his mate, walking away with Victoria at his side. And I knelt there, the blood oath burning on my palm, wondering how the love that had once felt so sacred could turn so quickly to poison.
