The key turned in the lock with the same familiar click it had made a thousand times before, but stepping into our penthouse felt like entering a stranger's home. Three years. Three years of medical treatments in sterile Swiss hospitals, of counting down days until I could return to Oliver's arms, of holding onto his voice through crackling overseas calls that grew shorter and more distant with each passing month. But I was home now, finally home, and tonight was our ten-year anniversary. The silence hit me first. Our penthouse had never been this quiet—Oliver usually had music playing, or the television murmuring in the background, or at the very least, the sound of his fingers dancing across his laptop keyboard. Instead, the air hung heavy and still, broken only by the soft hum of the air conditioning. "Oliver?" My voice echoed through the expansive living room, bouncing off walls that suddenly felt too large, too empty. No response. I set my suitcases down carefully, my heart already beginning that familiar flutter of anxiety I'd worked so hard to suppress during my recovery.
