Erin Dillion, the new intern at the law firm, was a naïve idealist who talked about love and justice every day. When she was assigned to handle logistics, she secretly gave away everything in the break room. I demanded she compensate the firm for the loss. She instead accused me of lacking compassion. She said, "I felt sorry for the sanitation workers, so I gave those things to them. Miss Broderick, I didn't expect you to be such a cold-hearted person." I requested that she be fired. My father, the director of the firm, shielded her behind him. He said, "She's young and pure, unlike you, a worldly old hand." Later, I took on a divorce case and advised my client to hide her daughter somewhere the husband could not find, only to have Erin turn around and give away the address. The client's daughter was kidnapped and beaten until she was almost dead. I was furious, but Erin retorted self-righteously, "A child without a father is pitiful. I did it for her own good." In the end, the client was forced to leave the marriage with nothing and sign 30-million debt. Believing I betrayed her, the distraught client came to my office to make a scene. Our soft-hearted colleagues protected Erin and helped her escape. Meanwhile, I was stabbed to death. When I opened my eyes again, I returned to the day the client first came in to consult about the divorce.
