Chapter 4
As I recalled my family being ruined ten years from now, I dialed the number I had prepared long ago. "Bring forward our plan."
Back home, I used every method I knew, trying to hunt down the party that made the successful bid for my family's company shares.
But that party seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth.
I never found this person or organization. Instead, Constantin showed up.
He looked utterly exhausted, and his eyes were bloodshot.
"Lydianne, you have made me lose another child," Constantin croaked hoarsely.
I recalled the time I had his child. In reality, I didn't ask for an abortion. It was his betrayal, his infidelity, which made me so angry that the baby died and was ejected as a stillbirth.
I looked straight into Constantin's eyes with my similarly bloodshot eyes and said with a bitter smile, "So do you want me to pay with my life?"
His hands clenched a few times at his sides. All of a sudden, he rushed at me in rage. "I don't want your life. I want you to give me another child!"
The moment he ripped my clothes apart, I couldn't hold back the nauseous sensation any longer.
The instant his lips touched my neck, I finally lost control and vomited all over him.
Constantin jolted back instantly. The lust in his eyes was instantly replaced by overwhelming fury. "Do I disgust you that much?"
I couldn't say anything as I was still retching.
As he watched me retch seemingly nonstop, his face became very contorted with disgust and anger. In the end, he grabbed his coat and stormed out.
"Mrs. Ligier's not right in the head. Check her into the psych ward!" he ordered the butler.
Once again, I was back at that all-too-familiar psych ward.
This time, I didn't put up a desperate fight like before. I went in without a fuss.
When the door swung open again, it wasn't Constantin who walked in. It was Wynter.
She pulled out a chair, sat down, and examined her nails with a smirk. "Gosh, even after getting another shot at life, you're still just as useless. You still can't keep your man, and you still can't save your own family.
"All it took was one fetus to ruin you completely. Pathetic," she said smugly.
I sat on the bed silently without moving, seemingly unaffected by Wynter's taunts.
She sighed in boredom before adding, "I guess no one has told you yet, since you've been locked up here. Your family's company is officially bankrupt. And when those two old geezers heard you ended up in the loony bin, they couldn't take it and took their own lives."
When I heard the news about my parents, my eyes flickered momentarily.
Instead of crying, I gave a soft snigger. My plan seemed to have worked.
Wynter frowned and thought that I had really lost my mind.
The moment she turned her back, I grabbed the water pitcher from the table and slammed it hard into the back of her head.
This was the first time I had lost my cool after I got locked up in here.
The staff rushed in and pinned me to the floor in seconds.
They strapped me to the bed and were about to jab me with a sedative, but Wynter, still reeling from the blow, suddenly lunged and snatched the syringe away.
"No sedatives! Just give her the treatment! Make her feel the pain until she wished she were dead! Damn lunatic!" Wynter spat out viciously.
My mind was hazy and unfocused. The next second, a surge of electricity hit me and zapped me wide awake.
The current kept zapping my brain nonstop. I was writhing in pain, and my limbs were jerking uncontrollably, but I still grinned through the agony.
The staff exchanged looks before turning up the voltage.
My heart monitor went wild. I could feel my heart thumping like it was about to explode. Just when it was about to peak, everything went blindingly white in front of me.
The strong metal doors were suddenly kicked clean off their hinges by an incredible force.
Everyone spun around and stopped what they were doing.
Wynter's eyes bulged in terror as if she had just seen the devil himself.
As for me, I only grinned knowingly as I watched the scene unfold.
Standing there was Constantin. To put it more accurately, it was Constantin from ten years ago.
He was only nineteen. Though his gaze was cold and ruthless, there was still a trace of youthful tenderness in his face.
Constantin?' Wynter's eyes widened, and the next second she clutched her hurting head and burst into tears before throwing herself into his arms.
"Sob! I only came to visit Mrs. Ligier, but she went nuts like a madwoman! My head hurts so…"
Her words were cut off by her own startled scream. Constantin had slapped her so hard that she was sent sprawling to the floor.
He then quickly distanced himself from her as if she were something dirty.
He shoved aside the staff pinning me down, tore the wires off me, and helped me up.
"Lydi, I'm sorry I got here so late. I'm sorry you had to go through all this," he said softly as he held me protectively in his arms.
"Constantin!" Wynter clutched her cheek, which had become swollen from the slap, and stared at Constantin with utter disbelief.
Blood was still oozing from her head where I had hit her earlier.
But Constantin didn't seem to notice Wynter's existence at all. He carried me up and marched out of the ward without looking back.
