Gerard's POV

Gerard was still holding the end of the song when he looked over and saw his wife's shoes lined up under an empty chair.

The final note had left the strings, but his right hand remained curved around Vivienne's. He released her and stepped between the couples flooding the floor. Lise sat barefoot on the stage edge, her dress gathered away from her heels.

The shoes looked deliberate beneath the chair. Their toes faced the room, close enough to touch. Gerard could not tell whether she meant to leave them or make him carry them home.
