“What did you book?”

Drew didn’t answer right away.

I heard a car door close on his end of the call. Nadine was probably with him.

“A cabin by the lake,” he said. “Friday through Sunday next week. Poppy likes the kayaking classes there, and Nadine found a riding stable nearby.”

Six weeks ago.

The photograph in the walnut frame had been taken six weeks ago too.

He hadn’t lost control at the reunion. He hadn’t decided that day to introduce Nadine to his family.
