The ambulance stopped hard outside Fairmont University Hospital.

The back doors opened, and cold air rushed over me.

"Thirty-seven weeks," the paramedic told the waiting doctor as the stretcher rolled into the bright light of the emergency entrance. "Her water broke, and the baby's heart rate is dropping."

They were already moving before he finished.

The transport wheels clattered over the floor.

Orderlies pushed the gurney down a narrow corridor toward the surgical wing.

Minutes later, I was on the operating table with three nurses moving around me.
