The word *divorce* changed Nathan’s expression faster than the sight of the blood entering my arm.

Morning light pooled beneath the blinds and stopped at the foot of my bed. The blood pump clicked beside me, each measured pulse traveling through the tube taped to my wrist. Nathan stood near Mara’s folder and my sealed ring, but the room no longer felt like a place he could cross simply because I was his wife.
