Chapter 1
The night before my engagement party, I took a nasty spill from the second floor.
I was knocked out cold for a full day and night. When I finally woke up, I heard the doctor tell my fiancé, Spencer Grant, that I might have amnesia.
Just to mess with him, I decided to play along and pretend I'd lost my memory.
"Who are you?" I asked, acting clueless.
Spencer's face froze for a second, and I almost burst out laughing.
But the next moment, he suddenly pulled the woman beside him into his arms.
"I'm your bestie's boyfriend," he said.
*****
That woman was Charlotte Shaw. My best friend.
And there was my fiancé, Spencer, holding her right in front of me.
She looked surprised for a split second, but then her excitement was written all over her face.
"That's right! I'm your best friend, and this is my boyfriend," she jumped in, practically beaming.
A jolt shot through me. I felt my blood rush to my head.
I thought I was just playing a funny little joke, but turns out I was the real clown there.
"You guys aren't serious, are you?" I asked, fighting to keep my voice steady.
Were they messing with me? Did they figure out my act and decide to play me instead?
"We're completely serious," Charlotte replied, sounding dead serious.
She waved her ring finger in my face, showing off the sparkling diamond.
"Spencer and I were supposed to have our engagement party today, but thanks to your little accident, the whole thing got called off," she said.
That ring was so sparkly that it nearly blinded me.
A ten-carat, perfectly cut diamond. Spencer had it custom-made for me months ago, and now it was shining on her finger.
"When..." I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper.
"When did this start?" I finally managed to ask.
Charlotte snuggled up against Spencer's chest, looking all smug.
"Five years ago," she replied, as if it were nothing.
Spencer looked a little uneasy, stealing a glance at me.
He seemed to slacken with relief at my calmness, the weight off his shoulders at last.
Spencer and I had been together for five years.
Wait, so they'd been together the whole time?
So my best friend and my boyfriend had been sneaking around behind my back for years.
Spencer made a call, and a few minutes later, a strikingly handsome man walked into my hospital room.
It was Samuel Foster, Spencer's best friend and the one who'd always made it clear he thought I wasn't good enough.
Spencer and Samuel both came from the most prestigious families in Havenbrook.
I was just a girl from Brookville, a small, unremarkable town.
Most of Spencer's elite circle saw me as a gold digger. They never hid their disapproval.
But Samuel was the most hostile. He never missed a chance to freeze me out.
He couldn't even be bothered to show up to our engagement party.
Now, Samuel stood in the doorway, staring me down with those piercing eyes.
"This is your boyfriend," Spencer said, nodding toward Samuel.
"Samuel Foster," he drawled, taking his sweet time with the introduction.
With that simple gesture, my so-called boyfriend had been reassigned. Just like that.
Spencer was lying through his teeth without missing a beat, but I couldn't believe Samuel would actually play along with this insane charade.
Samuel just gave a lazy smirk. "Yep, I'm your boyfriend now."
I was so shocked that I couldn't even form a single word.
Spencer passed me off to Samuel and left with Charlotte, not even sparing me a second glance.
Samuel and I locked eyes, the silence between us stretching on awkwardly.
"Take me home," I finally said, my voice barely above a whisper.
