Chapter 4

The morning after leaving my husband, I entered Boston Forge headquarters.

During the overnight flight, I had hired a divorce attorney, signed the petition electronically, and reviewed my presentation until sunrise.

At nine, I stood before the board of my husband's greatest rival.

Seven executives waited. Camille sat among them but did not present my work.

"Dr. Bennett, the floor is yours."

I displayed the first dated version of my dynamic recovery model.

I explained how it adjusted workloads using pain, swelling, sleep, and movement data, then showed research that predated my employment in Seattle.

Boston's legal counsel studied the screen.

"The Seattle Frost claims every method you developed while employed there."

"Seattle can keep its patient records and team data. I am bringing only the model I created before they hired me."

I placed my earliest drafts on the table.

"Every version has a date, and every page has my name."

The board chair examined them.

"What are you asking us to approve?"

"A recovery laboratory under my direction. My research remains mine, new work carries my authorship, and sponsors need my written permission."

No one called me emotional or disloyal.

They asked about budgets, staffing, and clinical review. I answered every question.

The board chair closed my file.

"We cannot approve this today. Legal needs to verify the dates, ownership, and publication history."

"How long will that take?"

"You will have our answer tomorrow."

I packed my research without asking Camille for reassurance. I had presented the evidence. The decision no longer depended on loyalty to a man.

That night, I slept badly and called no one.

At 8:17 the next morning, Camille called my hotel room.

"Legal verified every date. The board approved the laboratory."

I tightened my hand around the phone.

"And my conditions?"

"They are already in the contract."

By ten, I was back at Boston headquarters, reading every page before I signed.

The clauses were there. Preexisting research remained my property. Future publications required my authorship. Marketing staff could not overrule medical decisions.

Mason had called boundaries an attack on marriage. Boston treated them as standard.

Respect was not a promise whispered behind a closed door. It was clear language written before the signature.

I signed my full name.

Nora Bennett.

The team scheduled the official announcement for three that afternoon.

Outside the press room, a Boston player rose and offered his hand. A wedding band circled his finger.

"Ethan Cole. Team captain and apparently your first difficult patient."

His phone lit with a message.

"My wife is reminding me not to lie about how much my leg hurts."

"Listen to her, and we will get along."

He smiled.

"I also read your return-to-play paper. Boston made a good choice."

He had recognized my work without asking whose wife I was.

My phone vibrated before the press doors opened.

My attorney had sent two sentences.

The petition had been filed.

Service was confirmed.

Five minutes later, Camille and I stepped before the livestream cameras.

A screen behind us displayed four words:

Dr. Nora Bennett, Director.

For the first time, my name stood beneath bright lights without being attached to Mason's recovery.

Reporters first asked about Seattle's claim. I repeated my answer.

Then a reporter raised her hand.

"Dr. Bennett, did Boston hire you because you know Mason Reed's physical weaknesses?"

"No. Boston hired me because I know my own work."

Another voice cut in.

"Is joining Seattle's greatest rival retaliation for Mason publicly crediting Serena Vale?"

"My career is not a reaction to a man."

The room stirred.

A reporter near the aisle lifted his phone.

"Then can you explain this?"

A marriage certificate filled his screen.

"It shows that you and Mason Reed married three years ago. Are you the secret wife he refused to acknowledge?"

The cameras turned toward me.

For one second, I felt the old chain against my throat and heard twelve thousand people cheering while Mason gave my life to someone else.

My pulse raced, but I did not step away.

For three years, Mason had decided when our marriage could exist. If I denied it now, I would still be protecting the story that erased me.

I looked directly into the nearest camera.

"Yes. Mason Reed is my husband."

Questions exploded across the room.

I raised one hand.

"But your information is already out of date."

The room fell silent.

I thought of my attorney's message.

"Mason was served with divorce papers this morning."
