Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
Late that night, while Ben slept, I encrypted the final dome calculations and sent a secured copy to my attorney.
On the desktop, the folder labeled HARPER GRAND - FINAL DOME DESIGN remained in plain sight.
It contained no fabricated errors and nothing that could endanger the building-only a formal notice:
This design remains the sole intellectual property of Ava Morgan. Harper Group has no permission to use, alter, or reproduce it.
Without my completed calculations and authorization, Ben could not pass the final review.
More importantly, he could not pretend the work had ever belonged to him.
I placed my wedding ring beside the divorce agreement he had prepared.
I had signed only the section confirming that I wanted the marriage dissolved.
I crossed out the waiver of property, authorship, and financial claims.
Across his insulting settlement offer, I wrote:
I don't want your hush money. I want my name, my work, and everything the law says you owe me.
My suitcase was already waiting by the door.
I took my identification, clothes, original drawings, and the drafting tools my mother had left me. I did not touch anything that belonged to Ben or Harper Group.
Before leaving, I looked once at the closed bedroom door.
For seven years, I had mistaken endurance for devotion. Ben believed that if he kissed me gently enough, I would keep surrendering pieces of myself until nothing remained.
He was about to learn that my silence had ended before my love did.
I closed the penthouse door behind me and entered the car waiting downstairs.
At the airport, I removed my SIM card. Just before boarding, an email appeared in my inbox.
It was from Adrian Vale, founder of the Vale Heritage Foundation and one of the country's wealthiest restoration investors.
He had reviewed the independent theater proposal that Harper Group had blocked three months earlier.
I know your work, Ms. Morgan. If the proposal is still yours to present, I am willing to hear it under your name.
For the first time that night, I could breathe.
My life was not ending with Ben.
It was finally beginning without him.
Ben's POV
Just after midnight, Ben woke and reached across the bed.
The space beside him was cold.
"Ava?"
No one answered.
He frowned, assuming I had gone to the guest room to sulk. Then he noticed the apartment was unnaturally quiet.
In the study, the folder marked FINAL DOME DESIGN glowed on the computer screen.
Relief softened his face. He had known I would finish it. No matter how deeply he hurt me, I had always protected his ambitions.
Then he saw the wedding ring beside the keyboard.
Under it lay the divorce agreement he had intended to give me after the ribbon-cutting. My signature appeared on the final page, but every clause surrendering my rights had been crossed out.
Ben grabbed the mouse and opened the design folder.
There were no final drawings inside. Only the notice withdrawing Harper Group's right to use my work.
His private phone rang.
Claire's father did not bother with a greeting.
"The final review is tomorrow morning. Tell me you have the completed dome design."
Ben stared at the copyright notice on the screen, his grip tightening around the phone.
The final review was tomorrow morning.
For seven years, he had believed Ava would always be there when he needed her.
This time, she wasn’t.
And by morning, everyone would know the Harper Grand had never truly belonged to him.
