Chapter 4

The sound of shouting echoed down the school hallway, pulling me from my conversation with Marcus Chen. I turned to see Adan—my usually composed, brilliant boy—with his fists clenched, facing off against Kairo.

"You have no right!" Adan's voice carried a rage I'd never heard from him before.

Kairo's laugh was cruel, cutting. "Come on, charity case. You're not even her real son."

I rushed forward as a crowd of students gathered. "What's happening?"

"Mom." Adan's eyes found mine, desperation replacing anger. "He took it. He took your locket."
