Chapter 2
I had chosen Daisy to be my pawn when she was a receptionist in my company.
She didn't bother to hide her ambition at all.
She worked very hard, but in a silly and cute way.
I liked her because of the sincerity in her eyes.
"Pearl, can't you get over him yet?" George suddenly changed the subject.
Holding the goblet, my hand shook.
The wine spilled, so my fingertips became a bit cold.
"I will, one day." After a chuckle, I added, "It is a lovely day. Why don't we go finalize our divorce now?"
George gave me an odd look. "You seem more anxious than I do."
I picked up my bag and argued without a slight pang of guilt, "I do, because you are always busy."
I then took the passenger seat, and George cooperatively served as my driver.
The car stopped before City Hall. Neither George nor I got out of it.
George broke the silence by saying, "Sorry that I didn't make time for you in our eight years of marriage."
Hearing this, I turned my head and gazed at him. Suppressing my emotions, I said, "Well, how about giving me one more project? Look, your company..."
George gritted his teeth. He pushed the car door open and headed towards the entrance of City Hall.
Red-eyed, I held back my tears. I forced a smile and then followed George.
George offered me a free ride when we walked out of City Hall.
I shook my head as my answer.
Martin would arrive in ten minutes, and I didn't want him and George to meet each other.
Well, I had no plan for a public affair.
To make George feel that he was the wrongdoer in this marriage, I got a divorce as fast as I could.
I coveted his business project, whose net profit would be more than ten million dollars.
George said no more and drove away.
Waiting for Martin in front of City Hall, I recalled how I had married George.
Back then, I was told that I wasn't a Smith by blood, and the Smith family would soon disown me.
As for George, he was on his own.
All his family members were already dead.
Mine were all alive, but they were pretty much dead to me.
Therefore, I sought help from George, and we really hit it off.
The two of us quickly got married.
My dad coveted the wealth of the Gordon family, and he firmly believed that George, who had been rapt in art since little, would lead the Gordon Group to destruction in one year.
He wanted a piece of the pie, and it was best for him to take everything alone.
As a result, he attached so much importance to my wedding that he even ignored his real daughter.*****
"Pearl..." A sexy voice broke into my thoughts.
I turned my head and saw Martin beaming at me.
His eyes sparkled as he attentively held the car door for me.
"You finally belong to me." He leaned over to kiss me, and I pushed him away.
As disappointment flashed across his face, he looked like a neglected puppy.
With a pang of guilt, I said in a low voice, "Drive me home. I have a lot on my plate."
Instantly, Martin put on a smile. "I just knew that there was a reason for your vexation. I will take you home now. May I spend the night with you? I have been idle for quite a while."
I let Martin spend the night at my place.
Indeed, it was time for me to get over him.
Martin was young, muscular, and vigorous.
I was lured to bed before I finished reading the contracts.
I had sweat all over my body when I sat up on the bed again.
Martin went to the bathroom next door for a shower while I occupied the one in the master bedroom.
When I stepped out of the bathroom, he was posing before the mirror, in a purplish blue bathrobe.
"Why are you wearing that bathrobe?" My voice was cold and shaky.
Scared, Martin quickly took the bathrobe off.
Then, I realized that I had overreacted.
With his head down, Martin was nearly naked under the light, like a kid in the principal's office.
My anger subsided a lot. I picked up his clothes and helped him put them on.
"You know that I don't want people touching my stuff. If you need clothes, tell me first," I explained.
Martin gazed at me. His eyes were a bit red.
The next moment I was in a trance.
I wrapped my arms around his waist.
Shocked, Martin froze for a moment. Then, he tightly hugged me.
He was so smart that he knew better than to open his mouth at that moment.
The embrace lasted for three minutes, and I then told him to go to bed.
I spent the rest of the night on those business contracts.
I didn't send the contracts to my legal team till they were confirmed to be reasonable.
In the morning, Martin prepared breakfast in the kitchen.
I rang someone and made arrangements for Martin.
"Variety shows or TV dramas?" I asked for Martin's opinion during breakfast.
Martin chose TV dramas. He chose a supporting role in a TV drama directed by a famous director. What a wise choice!
