My hand trembled slightly as Adrian adjusted my diamond earring, his fingers brushing against my neck with unexpected tenderness.

"Remember," he murmured, his breath warm against my ear, "everyone will be watching us tonight. This is our first appearance as a couple."

I met his gaze in the mirror. The black designer gown he'd selected hugged my curves perfectly, making me look like someone I barely recognized—someone powerful, elegant, untouchable.

"I remember the plan," I replied, applying a final touch of crimson lipstick. "Be the perfect couple. Make Marcus and Sophia seethe with jealousy. Charm your grandmother."
