Chapter 1
Chapter One
My hands trembled as I stared at the pregnancy test, two pink lines confirming what my wolf had been telling me for days. A baby. Our baby. Alexander's heir. Tears of joy streamed down my face as I pressed my palm against my still-flat stomach.
"We're going to be parents," I whispered, feeling my wolf stir with pride and happiness.
I closed my eyes, focusing on the mate bond that connected me to Alexander. Even though he was across Manhattan at a territory meeting, our connection allowed us to communicate through our mind-link.
*Alexander? I have something important to tell you.*
I felt his immediate attention, that familiar warmth spreading through my chest. *What is it, Isabella? I'm in the middle of something.*
I took a deep breath, excitement making my heart race. *I'm pregnant. We're going to have a baby!*
The silence that followed was deafening. I expected joy, excitement, maybe even disbelief. What I felt instead through our bond was... cold suspicion.
*Stop wasting my time with lies.* His voice in my mind was harsh, the Alpha tone bleeding through even in our mental connection. *Is this your latest attempt to manipulate me?*
The accusation hit me like a physical blow. "What?" I whispered aloud, my hand instinctively moving to protect my stomach.
*I know what you're doing, Isabella. Creating some fantasy pregnancy to force the mate ceremony? To strengthen our bond? I won't be manipulated.*
My wolf whimpered, confused and hurt. "But I am pregnant," I said, though he couldn't hear my spoken words through the mind-link. "I wouldn't lie about this."
*We'll discuss this when I return. Don't bother the pack doctor with this charade.*
The connection severed abruptly, leaving me standing alone in our bathroom, the pregnancy test clutched in my shaking hand.
How could he think I would lie about something so sacred? I'd given up everything for him—my billion-dollar inheritance, my position in my father's ancient pack, my home in England. All for love. All for the mate bond I believed was blessed by the Moon Goddess herself.
I wiped away my tears, determination replacing hurt. I would surprise him with something special—perhaps an invitation to a private celebration gala where we could announce the news to the pack together. Once he saw the evidence, he would believe me.
I made my way to his study, planning to use his tablet to design the perfect invitation. Alexander always left it unlocked for me—a sign of trust I'd cherished.
The tablet lit up at my touch, but instead of his usual business emails, a series of messages appeared. Messages between Alexander and Sophia, his adopted sister.
*Miss you already. Last night was incredible.*
*Can't wait until she leaves for the alliance meeting next week. Three days alone...*
*No one understands me like you do, Soph. No one.*
My hands went numb as I scrolled through message after message, each more intimate than the last. Photos. Plans. Promises. A relationship that had clearly been ongoing for months, perhaps years.
My wolf howled in agony inside me, the betrayal cutting through our very souls. The tablet slipped from my fingers, clattering to the desk as I struggled to breathe.
How could he? How could they? I'd poured my heart, my fortune, my entire being into supporting Alexander and the Sterling Pack. And all this time...
I forced myself to stand straight, to breathe through the pain threatening to collapse my lungs. I needed to confront him. I deserved the truth.
Hours later, at the pack dinner, I watched them. Alexander at the head of the table, commanding and powerful. Sophia, seated too close to him, her eyes never leaving his face. The subtle touches. The secret smiles.
How had I been so blind?
Sophia rose to refill Alexander's wine glass, deliberately brushing against him as she leaned over. Her eyes met mine across the table, a flash of triumph in them before she looked away.
"Alexander," I said, my voice surprisingly steady. "I need to speak with you. Privately."
The conversation around the table died. Alexander's eyes narrowed dangerously.
"Whatever you have to say can wait," he said coldly.
"It's about what I told you earlier," I insisted. "And... other matters I've discovered."
Sophia's hand froze on Alexander's shoulder. His jaw tightened, and suddenly I felt it—the crushing weight of his Alpha aura pressing down on me, forcing submission.
"I said it can wait," he growled, his Alpha tone vibrating through the room, making the other pack members lower their eyes instinctively.
My wolf cowered within me, the pressure almost unbearable. I struggled to breathe as the force of his dominance pushed against my chest.
"Yes, Alpha," I whispered, the words forced from my lips by the power of his command.
As the weight lifted slightly, I caught Sophia's smirk behind her wine glass. In that moment, I knew with terrible clarity that my mate—my fated, Moon-blessed mate—had not only betrayed our bond but was using his Alpha power to silence me.
And as I sat there, isolated in a room full of pack members, I felt something inside me begin to break.
