Chapter 2
The pain was so overwhelming that two streams of tears slipped from the corners of my eyes before I could even hold them back.
When Daniel saw me crying, he immediately freaked out.
"What's wrong, Sherry? Don't cry. Tell me what's wrong," he said. His voice was full of worry.
I looked at him through tears, and his eyes were nothing but concern.
For a moment, I really thought I was everything to him.
But when he turned to grab a tissue to wipe my tears, I caught sight of his neck. It was covered in hickeys. My heart clenched painfully.
No wonder Daniel had been sleeping in a high-necked sweater these days.
When I was fast asleep, he was still working in his study.
When I woke up, he was already dressed in a suit.
I always thought Daniel felt guilty for betraying me, but it wasn't until now that it suddenly hit me.
All his attempts to cover things up were to hide the evidence of his affair.
But really, what was the point? Cherry had already threatened me the day she returned.
This time, she was determined to reclaim everything that had been hers.
So lately, the drawer meant for my wedding ring had been overflowing with intimate photos of Daniel and Cherry together in bed.
If Daniel ever noticed I wasn't wearing my ring and, on a whim, decided to put it on for me, all he'd have to do was open the drawer, and he would see everything.
Back then, if I went a day without my ring, he'd playfully complain that I didn't value our marriage at all.
Ever since Cherry came back, he hadn't even noticed that I'd taken off our wedding rings long ago.
And I realized Daniel's wedding ring had changed.
It looked like mine at first glance, but the details were totally off.
I even took it off while he was asleep to check. The engraving inside had changed from S&D to C&D.
My chest felt so tight that I found it hard to breathe.
When Daniel reached out with a tissue to wipe my tears, a wave of nausea hit me, and a sick feeling surged in my chest.
Without thinking, I slapped his hand away.
Daniel hesitated for a moment, with tissue still in hand.
I hurried to come up with an excuse.
"Sorry, I think I'm feeling a bit nauseous from the pregnancy. I need to lie down for a bit," I said.
Without bothering to look at Daniel's expression, I rushed back to my room in a panic.
As soon as the door closed, I rushed to the bathroom and threw up into the toilet.
Honestly, for the past three months of my pregnancy, the baby inside me had been so good to me. I never had any morning sickness at all.
But now, I was actually getting sick.
So, it wasn't just me who was grossed out by Daniel being so clingy and two-faced.
Even the little one inside me hated him too.
I didn't sleep a wink that night.
After throwing up so hard, my stomach even throbbed with a deep, nagging pain.
If this had happened before, I would've panicked and rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night.
After all, I was never the one my dad, my mom, or even Alex ever truly cared about.
All I ever wanted was a child who would look at me like I was their whole world.
But this time, I lay there, almost punishing myself, not even bothering to move.
Just like what Claire said, since his dad didn't love him anymore, maybe it was best if the baby left on his own.
That night, Daniel didn't come back to our room at all.
At midnight, I heard the front door close, and then again at six in the morning.
As for where Daniel went? It went without saying.
