Chapter 4

It started over breakfast.

Xavier was at the island with his espresso and his phone, scrolling through something he didn't share. I was at the counter with my coffee, going through the Aldridge numbers in my head. Normal Tuesday. The kind of morning that doesn't announce itself.

'People at the office are concerned,' he said. Casual. Like a weather update.

I set my cup down.

'About what?'

'Just—' He turned his phone over. 'Callie mentioned you've seemed off lately. A few other people have noticed.'

I looked at him. His eyes were on the counter between us. Not on me.

'Who?' I said.

He didn't answer.

Just picked up his espresso and took a slow sip, and the silence sat there between us, and I understood exactly what it was. Not an opening. A verdict. He'd already decided what to do with her version of the story before he brought it to the table.

'Right,' I said.

I picked up my coffee. Carried it back to the bedroom. Closed the door without sound.

I sat on the edge of the bed for a moment. My hand was steady. That surprised me, briefly, and then it didn't.

I opened my notebook and wrote the date. Wrote what he'd said, word for word. Wrote: *No names given. Account unverifiable. Source: Callie Reyes.*

Closed it. Put it in my bag.

Got dressed. Went to work.

---

Marcus found me on a Thursday.

It was after seven. Most of the floor had cleared out. He appeared in the doorway of the small conference room I'd been using for calls, his jacket over one arm, his expression the careful neutral of a man who had made a private decision.

'Drinks,' he said. 'If you have time.'

We went to the bar two blocks east. Corner booth. He ordered bourbon. I ordered sparkling water and didn't explain.

For a few minutes we talked about nothing in particular—the Hartwell extension, a funding announcement he'd seen that morning. Marcus was not a man who approached things directly. He'd been in operations for sixteen years. He understood infrastructure.

Then he set his glass down and looked at me.

'Every account this company holds,' he said, 'you built it. You or you adjacent. Your follow-through. Your name on the relationship.' He paused. 'Aldridge. Weston. Hartwell. The Linden Group. You want me to keep going?'

'No,' I said.

'She's been in the Whitmore files.' He said it flatly. 'I don't think she knows what she's looking at.'

I turned my glass on the table once.

'I'm not asking you to do anything,' I said.

'I know,' he said.

We stayed another twenty minutes. He finished his bourbon. I finished my water. When we left he went uptown and I went downtown and neither of us said anything about what the conversation had been.

On the subway I opened my handwritten ledger to the client column. I moved a line from one side to the other.

Not yet. But soon.

---

Tuesday. I worked from home.

The penthouse was quiet in the way it only was when Xavier wasn't there—not peaceful exactly, more like held breath. I had my laptop open at the kitchen island, a conference call at two, the Aldridge revision due by four. Good day, by the architecture of it. Manageable.

I ordered lunch at twelve-thirty. The East Village pasta place—the standing order I'd had for three years. Pappardelle with mushrooms and a light cream sauce. The owner knew my name. Sometimes he threw in bread without being asked.

I went back to the Aldridge document.

At one-fifteen the lobby buzzer sounded. I picked up.

'Delivery, Ms. Cole.'

'Send them up,' I said.

But the door didn't open for another eight minutes.

I didn't think about it then. I was mid-paragraph.

When the knock came I buzzed the door from my phone without getting up. Heard it open. Heard footsteps. And then Callie's voice—light, cheerful, already filling the room before I'd turned around.

'I was just downstairs dropping off those contracts for Xavier—the courier was right there, so I just brought it up. Saved the trip.'

She set the container on the island. Her coat was still on. She had a bright small smile and a casual ease that had no friction in it anywhere.

'I didn't know you were stopping by,' I said.

'Oh, I wasn't—just the one thing, I won't stay.' She was already moving toward the door, easy, unhurried. 'It smells amazing, by the way. Enjoy your lunch.'

The door closed behind her.

I looked at the container. Then at the door.

Something moved in me. Small. Like a single wrong note in a familiar piece of music—not loud enough to name, just enough to register.

I told myself: *she was in the lobby. It was convenient. That's all.*

I opened the container.

The pasta steamed. It smelled exactly right. The bread was there, same as always.

I ate at the island with the Aldridge document open in front of me, working through the revision, the city quiet outside the tall windows. My phone was on the counter to my left. Two and a half hours until the conference call.

I ate about half the container.

At two-ten the pain started.

Low at first. A tightening. I shifted on the stool and kept reading. Cramps, maybe. Stress. I'd not been sleeping well.

By two-twenty I couldn't sit upright.

I reached for my phone.

It wasn't there.

I looked at the counter. At the space where it had been. Checked my bag, my pockets, moving too fast now, one hand braced against the island because my legs had gone uncertain beneath me.

The kitchen line. The wall phone Xavier had kept from some previous tenant and never used.

I got to it. Dialed Bellamy's number from memory—the one number I knew without looking.

No answer.

Dial tone. Xavier's cell.

I could hear it in my head, the way it would sound: his phone lighting up on a table somewhere, Callie nearby, his eyes on her face. The decision he would make, again, between the small ringing fact of me and whatever she was offering.

The pain crested. White at the edges.

I slid down against the cabinet. The cold tile against my palms. My right hand moved, instinctive and terrible, flat against my stomach.

The room tilted.

I stayed there on the kitchen floor, in the quiet of the held-breath penthouse, and waited.

That was all I could do.

Wait.
