Chapter 1
The Manhattan skyline glittered beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows of Alexander's penthouse, a view that had once taken my breath away. Now, after three years, it felt like nothing more than an elaborate cage. I ran my fingers over the cool marble countertop, savoring the rare silence. Alexander wouldn't be back for hours—board meetings on Thursdays always ran late.
My phone buzzed against the glass coffee table. Unknown number. I hesitated before opening the message, my stomach tightening with inexplicable dread.
A video began to play—grainy but unmistakable. Alexander stood beside his sleek black Tesla outside his Wall Street office, his arms wrapped around a stunning blonde woman. Their kiss wasn't casual; it was intimate, familiar. The kind shared between lovers who knew each other's bodies by heart.
I watched it three times, my fingers trembling against the screen, before another message appeared:
"Get ready to move out. What's mine is coming home."
The phone slipped from my grasp, clattering against the imported Italian tiles. Three years. Three years of believing I meant something to him beyond our arrangement. Three years of telling myself that his calculated generosity—the Tiffany bracelets I never would have chosen for myself, the reservations at restaurants where the waiters knew his name but never mine—was his way of showing affection.
I pressed my palm against my abdomen, the phantom pain returning. The child that would never be. The choice that wasn't really a choice. The sterile clinic where Alexander had waited in the car, checking emails while I emerged hollow and forever changed.
The penthouse elevator chimed, jolting me from my thoughts. Only Alexander had direct access. But when the doors slid open, it wasn't him.
She was even more beautiful in person—tall and poised, with the confident air of someone who had never questioned her place in the world. The woman from the video.
"You must be the placeholder," she said, her voice dripping with disdain as she strode into the penthouse like she owned it. Perhaps she already did.
"Who are you?" I asked, though I already knew.
"Victoria Sterling." She smiled, all perfect teeth and cold eyes. "Alexander's fiancée."
She moved past me to the bar, helping herself to Alexander's prized whiskey. I watched, frozen, as she deliberately spilled amber liquid over my slippers—the cashmere ones Alexander had given me last Christmas.
"Oops," she said, not bothering to sound sincere. "You should clean that up. Isn't that what staff does?"
I stood my ground, though my heart hammered against my ribs. "This is my home."
Victoria laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "Sweetie, this has never been your home. You're just keeping it warm for me."
The elevator chimed again. Alexander stepped out, his expression shifting from surprise to something harder when he saw us both. His gaze moved between Victoria and me, calculating.
"Alex, darling," Victoria purred, crossing to him and pressing a possessive kiss to his lips. "I was just getting acquainted with your... arrangement."
I searched Alexander's face for any sign of the man I thought I knew—the one who held me through my mother's worst nights in the hospital, who sometimes looked at me with what I'd foolishly interpreted as tenderness.
"Alexander," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "What's going on?"
He didn't even have the decency to look ashamed. His eyes, the steel-gray I once found so captivating, were cold and distant.
"Victoria's back from London," he said simply, as if that explained everything.
"And the video? The messages?" I pressed, needing to hear him say it.
Alexander sighed, impatient. "Meredith, surely you didn't think this was permanent. You were just a warm body until she came back."
The words hit like physical blows. Three years of my life. My fertility. My dignity. All sacrificed for my mother's medical bills and the illusion that I mattered to him.
Victoria smiled triumphantly, her arm snaking around Alexander's waist. "Don't worry, I'll take good care of what's mine now."
I stood there, the whiskey seeping into my slippers, feeling something inside me harden into resolve. They thought they knew me—the compliant mistress, grateful for scraps of affection.
They had no idea what I was capable of.
