In the middle of the night, a phone call startled me awake. It was Van, Gavin’s friend, calling: “Sophia, Gavin’s had too much to drink. Can you come to Uptown Lounge and take him home?” He also sent a photo. In it, Gavin was slumped against Paloma, who was gently patting his back.

Gavin’s friends have never been fond of me. They’ve always found me too dull and hoped he’d end up with Paloma. It was unusual for Van to call me like this, and I was puzzled until I heard a glass shatter in the background.
