Three days after Claire left, she called me.

"Honey... well, Richard," she said, her tone breezy and casual. "How are you holding up? Make sure you eat properly now that you're on your own."

"I'm good," I said offhandedly, leaning back in my leather office chair.

"That's good to hear. Oh, by the way, my account balance seems off. Did you move any money around?"

There it was.

That was exactly the call I'd been waiting for.

"Yeah, I did." My voice stayed level. "Every cent in the joint account is gone."
