Chapter 3
Series 1 Chapter 3
On our twentieth anniversary, my husband wore the watch I gave him and went to see another woman.
The reservation at the French restaurant remained in my name.
I kept the large private room. Inside, Mark’s parents, my mother, our daughter Emma, and a few close friends were waiting. It was supposed to be a surprise party.
I stepped out of the private room and stood in the quiet hallway.
Through the glass partition, I saw Mark walk into the main dining area. Natalie was right beside him.
I stared at her neck. She was wearing a delicate gold chain. It was the graduation necklace I bought for Emma. Mark had stolen it from my drawer.
In the corner of the restaurant, Dean and the poker guys were sitting at a table. Dean had his phone up. He was recording.
I walked down the hallway and stood directly in Mark’s path.
The heavy oak door of the private room was just a few steps behind me.
Mark stopped. He looked nervous for a split second. But then he saw Dean's camera pointing at him.
"Mark," I said. My voice was low and calm. "I will give you one last chance. Leave her, and come inside with me right now."
Mark hesitated.
Natalie sensed it. She stepped closer to him and deliberately touched Emma's gold necklace.
"Are you really going to let her order you around?" Natalie whispered, but her voice was loud enough to carry. "Are you going to ruin our date just because she's throwing a fit?"
Mark’s jaw tightened.
His biggest fear was looking weak in front of other men. He knew Dean was recording every second. He couldn't lose face. He had to prove he was the boss.
Mark stood up taller. He deliberately raised his voice so the phone's microphone could catch it.
"You don't control me, Claire!" Mark said loudly, puffing out his chest. "I do whatever I want!"
To prove his point, to show off his absolute control, Mark grabbed Natalie’s waist.
He pulled her into a deep, aggressive kiss right in front of my face.
It wasn't a kiss of passion. It was a performance.
But Mark made a fatal mistake.
His loud, boastful voice echoed clearly down the hallway. It reached the other side of the heavy oak door.
"Dad?" Emma’s cheerful voice rang out.
The door to the private room swung wide open. Emma had heard him and came out to surprise him.
She stopped dead in her tracks.
Behind her, our parents and friends froze.
The smile vanished from Emma's face. She watched her father holding another woman.
Mark pulled away from Natalie. He turned around and saw his entire family staring at him.
The color drained from his face.
"Wait... no!" Mark stammered, stepping away from Natalie like she was on fire. "It's just a joke! It's a poker bet! Right, Dean?"
Dean and the guys rushed over, hiding their phones. "Yeah, Claire, just a prank. Chill out!"
Natalie rolled her eyes, annoyed that the spotlight was ruined. "God, Claire, why did you invite everyone? You're making a huge scene."
He just betrayed me in front of our daughter. But they still thought I was the problem.
My voice stayed level, and my eyes stayed dry.
I just pulled out my phone.
I opened the new group chat I created. It included Melissa, all the other poker wives, and our families.
I attached the basement security video and the screenshots of their texts.
Then, I pressed send.
A second later, Dean's phone buzzed.
Then another guy's phone rang. Then Mark's mother's phone lit up.
Mark realized what I was doing. Pure terror replaced his arrogance.
He lunged for my phone.
