Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
I was carrying my husband’s birthday cake downstairs when I heard him bet that I was too old to leave him.
My fingers tightened around the cake plate.
The basement door was cracked open, and laughter spilled through the gap.
Today was Mark’s forty-eighth birthday.
I had spent the entire morning making his favorite vanilla cake because, after twenty years of marriage, I still remembered every little thing he liked.
But downstairs, my husband was turning our marriage into a joke.
"You don't understand," Mark laughed. "Claire completely lost it over a tiny scratch on the car."
Dean, his best friend, burst out laughing. "Women always make everything bigger than it is."
I stopped outside the door.
A tiny scratch?
Mark had backed my car into a mailbox and shattered the taillight. I stayed quiet because I had taken extra shifts at work to cover the repair bill.
I had told myself he was just exaggerating for his friends.
I had been wrong.
A woman’s voice came from the table.
"She sounds exhausting."
I recognized Natalie immediately.
Dean's younger sister. Thirty-nine. Recently divorced. Staying at his house.
"She controls everything," Mark said with a sigh. "Every dollar. Every little thing I do."
A few people laughed.
Then he added, "She even reminds me to take my blood pressure medicine. Like I'm some child who can't take care of himself."
My grip tightened.
He made my concern sound like control.
The budget I managed had paid for our daughter Emma's college without debt.
The reminders about his medication came from the doctor who warned him about his health.
For twenty years, I had been protecting the life we built.
And he had been telling people I was the reason he couldn't breathe.
"If it's really that bad," Natalie said, "why don't you leave her?"
The laughter faded.
I stood frozen outside the door.
For one second, I waited.
I waited for Mark to defend me.
For him to say something simple.
That he loved me.
That twenty years meant something.
Instead, he laughed.
"Leave Claire?"
His voice was full of confidence.
"Why would I do that?"
Then he said the words I would remember forever.
"She's forty-five, Nat. She has spent twenty years building this life with me. She isn't going anywhere."
The basement went silent for a moment.
Then Mark continued.
"She needs me too much."
Something inside me went quiet.
Not because he insulted my age.
Not because he mocked everything I had done.
Because he truly believed my loyalty was a weakness.
He didn't think I stayed because I loved him.
He thought I stayed because I had no choice.
I looked down at the cake in my hands.
A cake I had spent hours making for a man who was betting on how much disrespect I would tolerate.
Then Natalie moved closer to the table.
I watched through the gap as she pulled out a hundred-dollar bill.
"I bet she would forgive anything," she said.
Mark smiled.
"Name it."
Natalie leaned back.
"Your twentieth anniversary is next Friday, right?"
The room became interested.
"Take me to the date you planned with Claire," she said. "If she still lets you come home afterward, you win."
Dean whistled.
The others laughed.
I waited for Mark to stop it.
I waited for him to say this had gone too far.
Instead, I heard his wallet open.
A second later, another bill landed on the table.
"You're on."
His voice was certain.
"Claire will always let me come home."
For a moment, I imagined walking through that door.
Throwing the cake onto the table.
Making him explain himself.
Making everyone see what he had done.
But I didn't.
I slowly turned around.
I carried the cake back upstairs.
And this time, I wasn't thinking about how to save my marriage.
I was thinking about what I would take with me when I left.
