Chapter 1
Series 1 Chapter 1
My daughter emptied her college fund to buy her birth mother an apartment.
I had spent thirteen years building it.
My husband authorized every dollar.
I found out three seconds before she called that woman Mom.
Withdrawal approved.
Available balance: $0.00.
The bank alert glowed on my phone as applause rolled across the ballroom.
When I looked up, Chloe Mercer was holding a silver key tied with a white satin ribbon.
My husband, Adrian, stood on one side of her.
Serena Vale stood on the other.
She had given birth to Chloe, abandoned her at four, and returned thirteen years later expecting to be welcomed home.
Chloe placed the key into Serena's palm.
"Welcome home, Mom."
The word landed harder than the empty balance.
One hundred and sixty-nine deposits.
$1,000 each.
Twelve monthly deposits a year, plus one extra every December.
Now it held nothing.
No one had warned me.
No one had asked me.
They had turned the money I saved for Chloe's future into a public love offering for the mother she had decided to choose.
I walked toward the cake.
Seventeen candles burned over white frosting. Behind them, Chloe still had one hand wrapped around Serena's arm.
"Chloe," I said, "what happened to your college fund?"
The applause stopped.
Her smile froze.
For one second, she looked like the little girl who used to hide behind my skirt whenever she broke something.
Then she lifted her chin.
"I used it."
"To buy Serena an apartment?"
She did not answer.
Adrian stepped in front of her.
He moved so quickly that I almost laughed.
Even now, he was protecting her from the consequence of something he had helped her do.
"I authorized the transfer," he said.
Chloe was still a minor. Without her legal guardian's approval, she could not have taken a single dollar.
So they had planned this.
They had discussed the account, signed the forms, bought the apartment, wrapped the key in ribbon, and waited until the room was full before letting me find out.
"That was her college fund," I said.
Adrian frowned.
"The money was for Chloe. She chose to use it for something meaningful."
"Her enrollment deposit is due next month."
Chloe finally spoke.
"Dad said you could put it back."
She said it without hesitation.
That made it worse.
To her, this was not a question. It was the natural order of our family.
Serena held the key against her chest.
"Evelyn, please don't ruin her birthday over money. Chloe only wanted to give her mother a home."
Her mother.
I looked at the girl I had raised.
"Do you think I should replace the money too?"
Chloe's fingers tightened around Serena's sleeve.
"You said you saved it because you loved me."
Her eyes reddened, but her voice stayed sharp.
"Now that I found my real mother, are you going to punish me for it?"
The room went silent enough for me to hear the candles hiss.
Adrian lowered his voice.
"Don't turn your love into a debt, Evelyn."
The room waited for me to soften.
I had done that many times before.
Tonight, I only opened my banking app.
The next automatic deposit was scheduled for three days later.
Transfer 170.
My thumb hovered over the screen.
Across the room, Chloe leaned into Serena's arms. Adrian stayed in front of them, guarding the family they had just rebuilt with my money.
For the first time all night, my hands were steady.
I tapped Cancel.
There would be no 170th transfer.
