Margaret stared at the three plates. Her face had taken on a grayish-green tint.

She followed behind me, her voice tight with worry. "That's it? It can't possibly be enough."

I smiled at her. "Don't worry. They can drink more water. That'll fill them up."

Just as I set the last plate down, I heard the front door unlock. Carl was back with Henry and his friends.

Henry burst in, all excited. "Mom, is the pot roast ready?"

"And the cake? Did you get chocolate or vanilla?" he asked, practically bouncing.
