Chapter 2
With just a few words, she accused me of being a thief.
I was so shocked I couldn't even get a word out.
I'd even told her how excited I was when my parents sent me a luxury custom-made necklace from overseas as my graduation present.
But no matter how much I tried to explain, everyone just saw me as a liar making excuses.
After all, Myla's reputation for being loaded was practically legendary.
They bought into her lies and slander, cursing me out as a lowlife who was dragging the school's name through the mud.
Some of the crazier ones even lunged at my neck, trying to snatch the necklace back just to impress their goddess.
In the chaos, the necklace was ripped apart, my neck was left scratched and bleeding, and my face was ruined for good.
I hated Myla with every fiber of my being. I wanted nothing more than to expose her for the fake heiress she really was.
But Myla had already made sure to guard against me.
Her goons viciously smashed into my car, leaving it completely wrecked.
I died a miserable death right there on the road.
The last thing I heard before I died was Myla's gleeful, unrestrained laughter.
Myla sneered, "Spending your money is the only thing that makes you worth anything.
"If it weren't for your parents, you'd be nothing. If you hadn't lucked out at birth, do you really think you could tell me what to do?
"Your stupidity gave me the perfect chance to steal your life away."
I died with my soul restless, forced to haunt Myla, never able to move on.
I had to watch, powerless, as she made herself at home in my luxury mansion, living the good life that used to be mine.
When my parents finally returned from handling business overseas, it was Myla who told them I'd died chasing thrills, speeding recklessly on the road.
The grief ate away at them. Already getting on in years, losing their daughter left them empty and joyless, barely interested in anything anymore.
It was Myla's fake kindness and pretend concern that finally brought a smile back to their faces.
In the end, they made Myla their adopted daughter and gave her everything: the company, the fortune, the whole legacy.
She took my place for good, becoming the one and only Miss Donovan, living it up in luxury, day in and day out.
The painful memories from my last life were still haunting me, clear as day.
Now that I was back, the first thing I did was cut off Myla's allowance and freeze her credit cards.
Let's see what she had gotten left to pretend she was Miss Donovan this time.
Myla had no clue what was about to hit her. She just signed the agreement without a second thought.
She knew this was her moment to shine on campus.
She wasn't about to let the chance to show off slip by. With a dramatic wave of her hand, she made a grand announcement.
She declared, "To earn some good karma, I'm treating everyone to lunch in the cafeteria today.
"Eat as much as you want, everyone. It's on me."
The students below erupted into wild cheers.
The AC guys and the library construction crew, folks who'd spent their whole lives sweating it out, had never met a boss this generous before.
They jumped right in, started calling Myla "Miss Donovan" and showering her with praise for being gorgeous and kind.
Myla was soaking up all the admiration, grinning from ear to ear.
She led a massive crowd out, everyone following her like she was some kind of celebrity.
The whole thing looked epic, like a scene straight out of a movie.
The crowd made a beeline for the cafeteria, barely able to contain their excitement.
I just strolled along behind them, taking my sweet time.
It didn't take long.
My phone started buzzing like crazy.
I checked, and sure enough, it was all messages from Myla.
She said: [You just cut off my card without even saying a word, Karla. Are you freaking crazy?]
[I order you to get your ass over here and pay up in three minutes.]
[Are you slow or something? Why aren't you here yet? I'm running out of patience.]
I couldn't help but smile as I replied: [You're always bragging you've got two hands and two feet, that you don't need my money or my handouts. I'm just giving you what you asked for.]
There was a brief pause, then she fired back another message.
She said: [I don't care about spending your money, but what gives you the right to cut me off?]
Even through the screen, I could feel her fuming.
Not giving her a chance to throw any more threats my way, I blocked Myla without a second thought.
This blowout lunch was gonna set her back at least 300 thousand dollars.
But now that Myla didn't have my card, her wallet couldn't back up her bragging.
I couldn't wait to see her crash and burn when everyone found out she was just faking it.
The moment I walked into the cafeteria, someone grabbed my arm.
Myla demanded, her voice sharp, "Karla, what took you so long?
"I've been waiting forever. Swipe your card and pay up already."
Her grip was so tight that it actually hurt. Guess she was scared I'd make a run for it.
I jerked my arm free and slapped her hand away, wincing from the pain.
Unable to hold back my anger, I shot back at her with biting sarcasm.
I snapped, "Weren't you the one treating everyone? Why am I the one footing the bill?
"Myla, you're getting real bold lately. Just because I'm easygoing, you think you can boss me around like I'm your maid? Well, I'm done putting up with your crap."
Her eyes welled up with tears in an instant.
Her voice was thick with sobs, and she deliberately played it vague.
"Didn't you have control of my card?" she whimpered.
"Why are you doing this to me?" she choked out.
As soon as Myla started crying, her white knights jumped out of nowhere and began attacking me.
"Karla, are you even human?" one of them shouted.
